I started at 5%, and I'm still doing 5%. I may up to 7% eventually, but I've only been soaping for three weeks now.

Very good. Don't make any decisions until you have used your soaps well cured so you can see what they are REALLY like.

I've got one batch that will have been cured for four weeks come Monday, but I've been using it since maybe the first week and a half, haha. The first bar I decided to use disappeared pretty quickly, but the latest bar has been lasting longer and is significantly more mild than the first bar I used. Can't wait to try my other soaps in the shower (mainly just because they all smell so good, as they all use the same formula, only some have exfoliants and some don't).

I usually soap at 5%, but recently have done some at 6% and 7%, so I can compare.

With salt bars and castille ... I superfat much higher.

yep. more mild is very common.

Does superfatting at 7% make the soap softer? I have made 9 batches so far and I am very pleased with the results but superfatted 5% only. I am going to go for 7% for my next batch to have something to compare.

By the way! Thanks so much for the great soap education I get everytime I sign on.

KEEP COOL!!! Very hot where I am!

I superfat at 7% for my grandmother and mother who are both seniors. I haven't noticed a large difference in the hardness of bars, although I do tend to use a fairly large amount of hard oils.

Thanks Mike, I am also a senior so I will try the 7% super-fat. I am new to soap making and I should have known how addicted it would be. Thank goodness that I have a large extended family to pass all this soap on too. Lots of bars went to Germany last week - my husband had to go visit his family. Oh welll I ramble......

I'll throw a spanner in...I do 10%. Pretty much standard.
BUT I get excema(spel??) really easily. So tend to concentrate on the higher SF rather than a super hard bar.
I've been known to scratch away the fabric of my jeans....
The other week I did a really high SF of 18% & heaps of honey. Its only for myself. Its oozing oil & honey but I tell you its the best soap I've used so far. Not drying & leaves me silky smooth. Clearly not for everyone & not for selling but **** I like that soap.

Nattynoo that's interesting ... my son has eczema(?). He loves my soap, but I think I will make some high superfat ones for him. My daughter has psoriasis ... maybe she'll find it better also.

My salt bars are superfatted 20% and I love that I can use them on my face and there's never any 'tight' feeling.
