Hello my fellow soap makers,

Making a Banana scented batch of CP soap soon. I would like ideas for a natural yellow colorant

Annatto seeds infused in some oil will give a nice yellow color but if you use too much, it will go gold or orange. My best yellow came from calendula petals, I infused some oil and add ground petals to the batter but the petal bits can be scratchy.

Brambleberry carries a lovely Brazilian yellow clay that's mostly yellow with a titch of warm gold. Like Obsidian, I love calendula petals for yellow. If you want it more deeply colored you can stick blend some petals into the batter, or leave most of it uncolored and whisk some petals in with a wire whisk when it's close to time to pour. I use whole petals, and they're never scratchy at all. I wonder, Obsidian, if they get scratchy when they're ground?

I would like to share that I've tried using anatto seeds for colouring my soap a yellow, and it turned out pretty orange. I would definitely try turmeric

If you use red palm oil as one of your oils it comes out a bright yellow, then over time fades to a creamy yellow.

Isn't saffron super crazy expensive?

yes, the real one is. i just bought the imitation one, and it works too. i think the one that's sold at the soaping supplies is the imitation one.

When I used turmeric it turned out more gold than yellow, though I see that others have gotten yellow. And my carrot puree turned out a yellowish orange. I think part of the trick is knowing just how much to use with your recipe, which may take a bit of experimenting. The good thing about color is that even if you don't get what you were expecting, it still looks good!

Obsidian and Paillo, please share more details about how you used your calendula petals. I tried infusing the petals and the soap was a lovely soft yellow when I made it, but by the end of cure it was a greyish white. I tried the petals in my soap batter (not ground but whole) and they turned brown.

WSP has an oxide powder that they say is all natural. I've used it and the color is right on, but it has sort of a dull look to it. I may need to cut back on how much I use.

I put about 1/4 cup petals in a small jar and covered with olive oil for a few weeks. When I was ready to use it, I put everything in a bullet blender and pureed the petals best I could. I strained the bits out with a sieve and used all the OO in my batch, added the blended petals at trace.
I separated out a small amount of batter and added a couple teaspoons of annatto infused oil for a swirls, it stayed a really nice yellow.

Here is my lemongrass soap with calendula. The darker swirls is from annetto, the soap has since gotten a bit brighter yellow but I suspect that is from the EO. The calendula didn't blend up as much as I would have liked. Next time I will grind the dry petals in a coffee grinder.

I infuse the petals, but don't use the petals from the infused oil, cuz they turn grayish brown on me too. I use just the strained infused oil, then add a scant handful of dried petals close to when I've ready to pour the soap. For me they retain their colors of yellow, rust and gold, love the way they look and the lack of scratchiness. I've gotten mine from SMR, they're very freshly dried and brightly colored.
