Making your own laundry detergent/stain remover, what would you use?

Oh my gosh, my skin would be gone!!

    Vanilla non discoloring FO

@MrsZ thank you for resharing that - that was the very article that started our long discussion thread here, which resulted in a homemade vanilla stabilizer recipe thread, here.

Making your own laundry detergent/stain remover, what would you use?

To me it smells lemon-y, which I really like. I can definitely smell it in products that I create, but others (maybe @Servant4Christ?) have said that for them, it disappeared quickly during cure. Regardless of scent strength, it is a good degreaser, which is why I like to add it to my stain sticks.

    I've bought a house!

No one in this forum can (or should) answer this question. The answer will be very specific to the location of the property. Even states within the US will have different answers based on their different laws. Bottom line, you need the advice of an experienced real estate attorney (that is the...

Making your own laundry detergent/stain remover, what would you use?

I've made and used homemade laundry soap in a variety of combinations. Most are a blend of 100% CO with 0%SF, washing soda, and borax, maybe with some enzyme powders. Here is my experience, which applies across the board to all the combinations I've tried. When we had hard water, the homemade...

    Vanilla non discoloring FO

That's a good question as to why they don't just put it in the FO. Perhaps some of the "non-discoloring" vanillin FOs do exactly that; it would be interesting to find out. My best guess would be that they don't want to include the sulfates/sulfites that are used to stop the discoloration, since...

    Vanilla non discoloring FO

My experience is that it will brown eventually unless you use a vanilla stabilizer.

Are Lauric and Myristic acids still drying in liquid soap?

I do find that LS gets milder with time. Some makers do recommending "sequestering" your diluted soap, which means setting it aside for a week or two after diluting and before using. I liken it to how Italian food, or most any soup, tastes better the next day, after all the ingredients become...

How do you store your CP during the curing process

For anyone having trouble with soda ash, I am one who recommends covering your soap for a few days after the initial cut. For me, a light covering of plastic wrap for 3-4 days, maybe a week at most, gives the soap more time to fully saponify, and really reduces the soda ash on my bars. After...

@dibbles I completely forgot about Caribbean Coconut, which I also love!

Are Lauric and Myristic acids still drying in liquid soap?

PS80 is an abbreviation for Polysorbate 80. It is a commonly used solubilizer that allows you to add fragrance and superfat to liquid soap, without the typical separation you would otherwise experience. Very handy stuff! Based on what DeeAnna and Benjamin wrote above, it might be worth trying...

I'm not a big BB fan, but their Coconut Cream is very nice.

    Cream Soap Questions

That makes sense to me, because PS80 is going to act as a solubilizer and emulsifier.

Thought I had conquered DOS... it's back! At a loss :(

I love mine, too - two years old and going strong! If you make lots of soap, or lotions, the savings and convenience is fantastic. This is the one that I purchased. Although it says it isn't available any longer, at the bottom of the listing, it says there is a newer version of the item, under...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Very nice! I'd go ahead and package them unless they still feel too soft for your liking.

    Misinformation?

100% agree. It's disappointing that she went this route. Then again, perhaps the manufacturer and seller decided to repackage this in a way that doesn't represent her original intentions or design - kind of like how the movie never really tracks with the book.
