    Colouring Goatmilk Soaps

I use ultramarine violet as well and have never had a problem using it in goatsmilk soap to get a true purple colour.

Newbie Canadian Soaper could use a hand please!!

Thanks for the links Hesty. That lye source is a new one to me and I think I'll try them out. Their oils are pretty reasonable too. Voyageur makes great wooden moulds as well. That's what I use. I don't use FO but I find the EOs at Canwax are reasonable and never had a problem with them...

Newbie Canadian Soaper could use a hand please!!

Hi Islandgirl. I'm Canadian and live on Cape Breton Island, so I can relate! I buy my coconut oil in bulk from Sears.ca (I know, they wouldn't be the first to come to mind). I get stuff like shea butter and essential oils at www.canwax.com in Ontario. The prices are reasonable. The only...

    Did I ruin my soap?

I don't use a wood cover on the top of my mould. I have never personally had a problem. I do cover with freezer paper, only to avoid ash.

    Lye Temperature

I also add lye directly to frozen GM (not slushy). If you do it slowly it actually can take a while to get it to reach 95, so there is never really any threat of it burning.

    SOAPCALC results change

I wish that it would convert batch sizes automatically when switching from pounds to ounces and grams. It always defaults back.

Very, very new to CP soap making

There is actually quite a bit written about pyrex shattering, especially the newer pyrex, at higher temperatures. I was using pyrex pitchers but I switched to a heat resistant plastic juice container that works fine and is deeper to prevent splashing.

    fractionated coconut oil

I made a batch of CP with fractionated coconut a few weeks ago. I have read that it makes soap too soft to use. I would have to say that the bars are quite soft weeks after making them, and will likely not last very long. Coconut oil is a very different product that hardens bars and is a staple...

    CP recipe gone awry

I personally don't make batches that large, but are you using any scents?

    Goats Milk question!

I freeze the goats milks solid as well in a flat ziplock freezer bag and take off chunks as I need it. It's a little more work to break up but I find that it forces you to not rush the lye solution.

    Yikes!!!

When I first started soaping I mixed with lye water at 135 (not knowing any better) and it didn't seem to cause any problems at all. I am still very impatient having to wait for temperatures to drop between 90-110.

    deflated. they showed up..the dos

It was mentioned in earlier posts that sunflower oil is bad for DOS as well. Are different grades of OO less prone in anyone's experience?

My first CP soaps, one question also

New to CP soap? I wish I could swirl like that. They all look fantastic.

    Titanium Dioxide

I had heard that using titanium dioxide results in a less moisturizing bar. I've added it to my last two batches but haven't tried it yet. Just add it to the soap and mix it in.

Sweet or not so sweet almond oil

Thanks for confirming. This is good to know because I paid about a third of the price for it compared to a brand I had that had "sweet" on the label. Who needs sweet soap anyway, it's not like we'll be eating it..that is... unless we have been very bad...

Sweet or not so sweet almond oil

Saturday is soap day around our house. I was wondering if some can tell me if there is any difference between sweet almond oil and Spectrum brand almond oil (no sweet on the label). I ran out of the sweet stuff putting together my first batch of soap with colourant, fragrance and hopefully...

    Stick Blenders

I managed to get a good deal on a Kitchenaid and I love it. It's powerful so I have to be careful with air bubbles. I tend not to run it continuously and just power it on in spurts until I get to trace.

    Palm oil in Canada

Thanks for the links! These will help a great deal. Palm seems to be such a standard oil in most recipes. I'm guessing the rainforest issue is probably one reason why it's not as available as I first expected it to be. Cheers. Chris

    Palm oil in Canada

Can anyone point me to where I might be able to find local sources for palm oil in Canada, or is it something that people generally ship in from a supplier somewhere else in the country? I'm not sure if this is something that is typically found in a grocery store here, but I have struck out so...
