I have a friend who does historic re-enactment events and I'll be damned if I can remember the exact phrasing they use so someone correct me. It's not Civil War but rather the time frame and it's more about every day life. They camp for the weekend or week, live in tents, wear period clothing, have to cook period foods etc.. My friend said she used someone else's soap for the time that she's there but it's dreadful and makes her break out like mad. I told her I would make her a soap that I thought should pass muster for period ingredients (except for lovely regulated lye, of course) so I made her a 90% tallow 10% castor soap with calendula leaves in it. She has used my other soaps as well but she said the tallow soap is her favorite soap ever. It seems like the high amount of tallow can balance the higher amount of castor without the dragging castor can bring. I think they had castor oil back then...
Back to the more interesting topic of bacon, though. I recoiled at the suggestion of soaking it first because isn't salty fat one of the biggest draws in the universe? The potato chip for instance is another example. I always have bacon in my refrigerator and I am like someone's husband in that I sometimes have a pound of bacon and nothing else for supper. I was tucking into my plate one time when one of my son's friends, who was raised vegetarian but has been known to fall off the wagon, asked if I was eating a big plate of bacon for supper, incredulous. I said, "Why yes I am." And it was delicious.
Three things I ALWAYS have in my refrigerator are bacon, milk and butter. My cholesterol runs about 160. What a great life!
