No, I'm not talking about toothpaste.

Recently I read an article about brushing your teeth with soap is more beneficial (and less harmful) than with fluoride toothpastes. Does anyone happen to do this on a regular basis? Do you use a special recipe for the bar you brush with? If I took a bite out of my CP soap will I have uncontrollable pooping?

I have not found tooth soap or tooth powder to clean my teeth as well as regular toothpaste.

People who do make tooth soap tend to leave out the oils that make soap really bubbly, like CO and PKO. Leaving those out cuts down on the soapy/foamy taste of tooth soap. I've heard that 100% OO soap is great for it.

Pardon my PSA for fluoride here... I've read a lot about people refusing fluoride because it's harmful and has been used in the past as rat poison. Everyone is completely entitled to their opinion. Fluoride is used in many communities in the water supply and most toothpastes on the market. Just thoroughly do your research before you decide to ban certain ingredients from products you use. Chocolate is toxic (aka: poisonous) to dogs but I'm not going to stop eating it.

I'll now... step off my fluoride box...

There's been several discussions about tooth soap. Here's a link to one of them.

In the upper right hand corner is the "Search" link. I'm sure there's more if you want to research this further.

Sorry, I should've looked beyond the first page of search results.

Thanks.

This was on the first page about a third of the way down. Don't worry about it. It does take time to get used to the search function. You can always add a comment and resurrect a thread if you find something that interests you. Then you might get new responses to expand on a topic.

I'm going to just brush with some regular recipe soap and see how it goes.

As for fluoride, I've got nothing against it. I'm just trying to find more applications for soap since I have so much of it.

A few people mentioned that putting a basket of soap in their car or bathroom works great as a freshener.

@Hazel
If you type "teeth", it's on the second page

I don't like soap as toothpaste, I use either bicarb or herbal toothpaste. Theoretically though would the alkalinity of soap help protect your teeth as well as clean them??

I'm against fluoridated products... but then I'm also against chocolate lol I've had a few health problems though so I guess I'm pretty serious and conscious about what I eat and put in my body now.

I could go on and on about fluoride and why it is bad juju....but I won't lol. I will say though that there are some really good resources out there that raise some serious questions about it all.

Try typing "tooth", you'll find more discussions.

I just brushed with a regular recipe soap. Lots and lots of suds, more than toothpaste makes, but the aftertaste is awful and lingers. I had to brush with toothpaste afterwards to get rid of it.

Hopefully castile will be more oral friendly.

My grandfather ... a herbalist ... had us use salt and water to brush our teeth. He also showed us how to use twigs (from some trees), if we were ever in the bush and in need of something to clean our teeth. Have to admit that when I left home, I quickly became very comfortable with toothpaste!

That's all I use for my teeth. I make my own tooth soap (via CP) and have for at least a couple of years.

And it tastes o.k.? I don't wanna say it, but brushing with soap makes my mouth taste like the post stage* of upchucking.

*The post stage is after the part where you go BLAAARRRRRGHH.

Commercial toothpaste isn't made out of a single ingredient, so I believe neither should the homemade one be.

I am still working on the "blueprint", but after some research, I believe good ingredients can be: clay, glycerine, baking soda, salt, powdered herbs, maybe a little vodka, if you're not driving :p

Btw, liquid soap may be more tasteless.

My biggest problem is the tube ... Where to get it and how to fill it with the paste ?

Yes, it tastes fine. Just don't use coconut.

When I first saw this on another forum- I was completely freaked by it. I was also intrigued in a weird way- so I tried some and actually really like it. My teeth feel clean and breath is good. I actually like it.

This is an important piece of info! I just tried with castile and it tastes way better. I wish I scented with something less flowery though...tastes like I just snacked on a bouquet.

@Stinkydancer
It does seem like it's better than toothpaste, however, I personally will be doing further reading on this (preferably from a non-internet source). The guy who I *think* got this started is this phd chemist named Dr. Gerald F. Judd. He wrote a book about how to keep your teeth in great shape from birth to death. One of his main points in the book (not the only point) was to brush with a regular bar of soap. The problem is that it feels like he's just trying to sell his book rather than present facts.

Don't quote me on this, but at one point in his book he says that sugar does not destroy teeth. This is true, but micro-organisms that live on your teeth just happen to eat sugar which indirectly leads to cavities. He also mentions most toothpastes has glycerin, unlike for skin, is not good for your teeth. It apparently takes 20 rinses to get off. The problem is most real soap have glycerin, so that's a bummer.

With that said, I'm going to keep brushing with my ol' bar of castile and see what happens.

If you think about it- we make soap and other things to keep the toxins away. Tooth soap is about the same. So far I'm happy with the one I have- I have not made my own because I have to research it. But I'm guessing- it's just regular cp maybe with some baking soda.

I do know that my skin because of handmade soap never needs lotion. Once I started washing my hair with Shampoo bars and kept Sulfates away my hair stopped falling out and started growing again.

So I'm guessing that with all the chemicals in toothpaste- I'm doing better with the natural stuff. I will admit- it did take getting used to but I feel good using it.

I remember trying it (tooth soap) once when I started going no-fluoride. Never again. Blech.

My own PSA: I went 6 years no fluoride, brushing 2-3 times a day + flossing with Tom's of Maine no fluoride tooth pastes. I was adamant that fluoride in any amount was pure evil.

I need every tooth pulled and will be getting dentures before I'm 35.

Maybe not so evil.

While we buy bottled water and avoid drinking/ingesting fluoride, you can bet we use fluoride toothpaste now. Thankfully only one of my 4 kids is worse for our no fluoride stupidity, but they are his baby teeth, his adult teeth coming in are good.

Is there much difference between tooth soap and regular soap? I did a quick google and didn't find much on ingredients...just a lot of 'ohhh it's good for you!' sort of thing.

My understanding was that fluoride is good for teeth and bad for other things.
