My understanding was that fluoride is good for teeth and bad for other things.

The idea of going no-fluoride is that even if you're careful with fluoride toothpaste, you get some in your system and even that tiny amount is do bad things (what, I really don't know now - mutant-itis? Cancer? I doubt it, and whatever it is, I'd rather risk it than lose all my teeth in my 30s), and there was a time when I got sucked into the whole fad. It took years for the damage I was doing to being apparent because I already had genetically "bad teeth" ...and then, too late to fix it (though I've spent thousands trying).

I only post because it's easy to see other people posting (web-wide, not here) that they don't don't use fluoride and are fine. It's not a guarantee.

You can get a condition called fluorosis from ingesting too much fluoride. This doesn't typically happen from just drinking fluoridated water. It usually happens from people drinking fluoridated water, and taking a prescribed fluoride supplement, and possibly taking in fluoride in other ways. Fluorosis is a chalky, white spotted appearance on the teeth, ranging from mild to severe.

Yes, some people are more prone to tooth decay than others! Just be careful!

I started making my own tooth soap a couple of years ago and have been selling it now for just about that long. My teeth are no longer sensitive (sensodyne all my adult life), my teeth are whiter and I have a lot less plaque and scaling. My niece has braces and she uses my tooth soap - her dentist is amazed that her teeth are white since braces usually cause the teeth to blacken or gray or something (not really clear on this part) and he wanted to know what she was using.

My understanding (and I am not a dentist) is that toothpaste leaves a coating on your teeth which does't allow them to "breathe" which is what causes the sensitivities. By using tooth soap there is not a coating left behind allowing the teeth to absorb minerals the way they are meant to.

The key to making it is to use "sweet" oils. CO, Palm, Palm kernal, tallow, lard, etc give the soapy taste.

As much as people like this product there are still others who don't so everyone has their own preferences. I love it. :D

Fluoride is great for your teeth. It combines with calcium in the teeth to form a harder more resistant enamel. Fluoride can actually remineralize your teeth if you use it on a regular basis and can actually reverse small cavities.

I tried brushing my teeth with soap and nearly threw up.

'Tis the coconut (and fragrance). Non-scented castile would probably be the best way to go, or maybe with a little spearmint/peppermint/eucalyptus combo.

Salt soap actually doesn't taste too bad...
I'd rather stick to store bought toothpaste though :p

I use tooth soap that I made. Here are some help with taste. One use over a year old no thrills soap. My was unscent salt soap that broke up. Base formula lard, coconut and almond oil with salt. That was it. Before using use a prewash like Plax in mint formula. That covers the soap taste if you get it. I brush my tongue and have not had a strong soap taste yet. My soap work so much better than toothpaste. It really help clean my teeth and heal my gums.
