I want to make some tiny embeds for the challenge and I'm wondering if I can use my minni frother to make 2 ounces of soap or will it make my soap full of bubbles. I've been wondering how people make tiny batches of soap and I thought maybe I can use my mini frother to do it.😄

I've been wondering how people do that, too. So far, I just make 1# batches and put the extra in another mold.

I don't really use my mini frother for anything any more. I tried it for dispersing clay/natural colorants in water or oil, but it splashes A LOT, makes a big mess and does seem to add a lot of air. All those issues could be because of the tiny amounts I'm usually working with. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if there was enough liquid to cover the frother by a good margin.

The rules say you have to make 2 bars. Don't think that the frother would make it too bubbly. I would tap the mold to remove some air bubbles perhaps.

I make small batches for embeds in a #5 plastic container that is tall and narrow, with a base roughly the same diameter as my stick blender. Mine is a Happy Farms ricotta container from Aldi. 2 oz of oils + lye solution is enough to cover the holes in my blender.

I think there is a good chance of that kind of frother making some bubbles. If you want to try making a tiny embed batch, you might try a whisk. I usually make soap and a small amount extra. If you use soap dough, you could make a batch for that purpose, using what you need for your embeds first.

I just want to make sure I'm clear about the rules it says you need to make your soap out of one batch. So does that mean if I were making layers in my soap that I must make one batch and split my soap into equal portions for my layers. or am I allowed to make 3 or 4 batches of soap separately for each layer to make one batch of soap?🤔

One single batch. When I make layered soaps, I masterbatch my lye solution and oils, and mix small batches from that. I like to use a fragrance that will give me some amount of working time to get everything well mixed and poured but then sets up more quickly. By the time I get the following layer ready, the poured layer is set enough to pour over.

8.akseattle - I've been super busy at work and haven't soaped since August 31, but this seems low key enough that I can do this!!!
9. not_ally - Love yellow but don't think I've ever done a majority yellow soap. Also, @dibbles, I have ombre envy as usual when I see one of yours.

@CLMP Badger makes a mini mixer for model paint that has a dispersing-type disc attachment rather than a frother. I find it helpful for blending colors into small portions, etc., but you still need to watch where the disc is in the batter in order to avoid introducing bubbles. Like @dibbles, I would normally make enough batter in a full batch to have extra for filling an embed mold. If you end up making a separate small batch consider keeping the temperature of the batter relatively high so it’s easier to reach a light trace.

Thanks for giving a link to my egg soap article! There's a picture of a blue and yellow soap in that article, and I thought people might like to know how I got the different yellow colors.

The light yellow is what you get from the egg yolk. I may have added a small dash of titanium dioxide (TD) to that portion of the soap batter -- you can see the color is opaque, which is typical for TD.

The darker yellow comes from oil infused with whole annatto seeds. I strained the seeds out and used the oil as a colorant. I'm sure I didn't add any TD to this portion, so this soap has a more translucent look.

The two shades of blue are probably ultramarine blue. I added TD to lighten the ultramarine to get that pastel blue. I probably added a tiny bit of black oxide to the dark blue to make it even darker.

A reminder that the entry thread will open tomorrow (11/18) and will remain open through 11/24. And another reminder to include a picture of your split batter if your design doesn't clearly show 50% of your soap batter is yellow. I'm excited to see what everyone has been working on.
