Second Batch! What do you think?

Okay so I'm about to make my second ever batch of soap!

I'm going to do:

Coconut Oil 20%
Lard 40%
Olive Oil 10%
Safflower Oil 10%
Sunflower Oil 10%
Shea Butter 10%

I'm doing 6% superfat and adding honey, oatmeal and grapeseed oil at trace.

What do you think? Does it look like it will work good?

Unfortunately I have a feeling that something went horribly, horribly wrong. I was whisking it, and I got a light trace. So I added the honey, oats (ground up with mortar and pestle), grapeseed oil and some cocoa powder for color. I mixed it all up and it didn't seem like it was at trace anymore. AND all the oats went right to the bottom. I stirred it some more and then poured it into the mold.


Hoping for the best, but I'm thinking something went wrong. It was pretty watery looking going in the mold

How much grapeseed did you add after you reached the trace? I prefer adding everything in the beginning. There is debate whether you can choose supperfatting oil in cp, as there is lots of lye left when you reach trace.

To figure out how much of each oil to use, and what percentages you can go up to for them. For grapeseed it says to add it at trace. You can add it at the beginning? What percentage can you use of your total oils?

I have a stick blender actually, but I'm a little afraid to use it lol. Knowing me I'd end up holding it at a wonky angle and spray myself in the face with lye or something. I'm working up to it though. I'll probably use it next time

Ganiggle - when you use the SB, you'll be kicking yourself for not always using it. If you're freaked out, try goggles, a Jason Voorhees mask, and extensive prayer. I promise, you'll be fine.

yes, you'll be kicking yourself for not using your stickblender. As long as the bottom part is immersed you'll be fine. You'll reach trace so much faster and you can see it happening. It's like when you making instant pudding. Kind of. It starts getting creamy. Just wear all of your protective gear. Long sleeves, big gloves, goggles....

I don't add oils at trace. I'd get confused. Just put all of your oils in soapcalc, use your 6% superfat and add all the oils at the beginning. Much easier for starting out. If you wanted to use grapeseed, put that in soap calc from the start.

If your soap didn't turn out I know someone will be able to help you fix it!!

If you hold your stick blender at an angle when you put it in the soap pot , it lessens the bubbles that you get in the soap. Wear your goggles and gloves and you will be fine. Just always take your finger off the on button before you take it out of the soap , it becomes a habit .

I'm sure it will turn out fine .. And it's all good learning!

With the oats, either grind them super fine (almost flour) or wait until medium trace before adding so they don't sink :wink:

I grinded them up pretty good with a mortar and pestle (those things are so cool! and HEAVY) and I got it pretty ground up but there were still a few bigger bits in there. Next time I'll weight until a medium trace though. I just went and checked on it, and I'm excited that it looks like it's hardening with no separation!

However, a lot of the oatmeal bits look like they've sunk to the bottom, it doesn't look really bad though. It's not like a straight line of where the oats are/aren't. It's like a faded line, so there's still some of it in the upper part of the soap. Not the best, but not the worst either

LOL i totally peeked... probably while you were typing this! My first batch seems alright. I half-mutilated it getting it out of the molds. i really don't like these plastic molds. I want my wood one right now! lol. So some of the fancy decoration parts of the mold... like a flower, half crumbled into the mold. But oh well. It's really white, creamy and opaque looking and as long as it works like soap, I'll be happy. I'm going to try to take a picture later today soon as I'm done my articles.

Haha, you know what? I actually have a military NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) suit sitting around here somewhere complete with gas mask. I should put that on to soap!

Grinding oatmeal up with a mortal and pestal sounds like way too much work for me! you're a dedicated soul! I put my oatmeal in the blender, it will powder them up just fine. with a whole lot less work on your part. :wink:

haha that could be arranged! Unfortunatley the gas mask doesn't have the actual cartridge for it, just the rubber part, but I could totally bust it out and put it on and get the boyfriend to take a picture of me with some soap.

I really look quite ridiculous in the suit lol. It's many sizes too big hahaha. Should make for an interesting picture.
