OMG my scale was finally delivered today! I can make my first ever batch of soap!

I have:

Coconut Oil
Palm Oil
Shea Butter
Soy Butter

What percentages should I use? Any recipe ideas? THANKS!

So very, very excited.

:D scales are so important to soapmaking! to get the most accurate measuremnt for lye may i suggest you convert it and weigh it in grams.

www.soapcalc.com is a soaper's best friend. take a little time and read the short info's on building a good soap bar. it calculates your lye, water-everything.

never used soy butter. but maybe 25% coconut-10% shea-65% palm, with an 8% superfat/lye discount. soap around 100 degrees.

www.soap-making-essentials.come has some great recipes, info and decorating ideas. you might wish to take a "peeky".

good luck with your new soap! :D

Thanks SO much! Good thing you posted this too lol, otherwise I was going to use 30% coconut, 40% palm and 30% shea butter, which might be greasy do you think?

I will definitely measure the lye in grams :)

The scale I got is sooo cute! I got it from Brambleberry (Their $20 one) and it's so compact and easy to use. There's only 2 buttons! I'm used to getting something new and having to read through a giant instruction manual. The instruction manual that came with this thing was like... half a page of paper hehe.

I'm off to make my first batch of soap!

:D one other thing, shut your scale off in between measuring stuff-in other words, don't just leave it running. this saves on batteries.

there's no "carved-in-stone" soap recipe. we all have our fav recipes. olive oil-just the golden (not virgin) is lovely in soap. you can sub that for some of the palm oil.

have fun, and be sure you post! :D

I've only used coconut out of your list (waiting for the courier and my shea!) so I'm no help with the recipe, but I wanted to join in your excitement that the scale finally arrived!

*woohoo* your going to have so much fun

- you know we expect pics right?!

Hehe, I will definitely post pics! The soap won't be pretty, as I'm not adding colorants or anything like that, but hopefully it'll be soap! haha

Good thinking about shutting the scale off between uses :) I'm going grocery shopping and you'd better believe that olive oil and lard are both on my list :) Now begins the search for my favorite soap recipe!

Gooooooo Ganiggle!!! :D

Thanks!!! I just finished pouring it into the molds and now begins the waiting :)

It smells sooooo good! I added lemon 5 fold, sweet orange, lavender, and anise star EO's.

I hope the soap retains the smell :)

WOOT you have a scale and made your first soap. I can't wait to hear how it turned out..

It's a plastic mold. Some of them have 3 cavities and others have 4. I got them from Michaels.

do you have a towel or something to insulate? you want them to warm but i doubt that that individual molds can get too hhot.

you know those plastic drawer dividers work well, too, when you plan on expanding in size.

little caesar dog food containers and lots of the 4 oz pudding and baby food containers work well, too.

i'm constantly cruising the deli/dairy case looking at 4 oz continers. :D

Thanks for the tip! I don't really have anything to insulate it with. Wouldn't it touch the soap and make a mess?

It's probably too late anyways, but I do have a three pound wooden mold on its way to me, and it has a lid! Eventually I'll probably want to get a bigger one. As soon as Paypal clears into my bank account I'm going grocery shopping for lard, olive oil, and fat from a butcher so I can get more soap making ingredients. The first batch I made today was super fun. I just really hope that the soap turns out!

Oh yum.

Lemon Meringue Pie mmmmmmmmm. I can be there in 3 hours for a piece of pie , oops I mean a bath.

Hahaha! You could totally be here in 3 hours. I don't think the soap would be ready by then though lol. I used up all the essential oils that I had but I'm ordering more. If the smelly quality lasts after it's done curing, and I can replicate it, maybe I'll mail you a bar of it :D

I visit Regina once in awhile so who knows. I am happy that you are loving your first soap. :D

My hubby and I almost considered moving to Regina many years ago. He was going to do an exchange program with Royal Canadian Air Force. But then we got nervous and never did it.
