Shampoo instead of castor oil? Big mix up.

Castor should have been at 10%. I think I got about half of the shampoo out. SF was 5%. Hadn't heard of hybrid bars so I suppose there is hope yet. Thanks!

What soapy mistake have you made today?

I substituted a surfactant shampoo for castor oil today. Got much out and replaced with castor but it was gloppy and jelly. Still in the molds so will see if any is salvageable - I doubt it tho.

Thanks Irishlass I had found those same posts as well which is why I asked again as the answers in the above posts seemed to vary. Thanks. I too did a Google search, however, read conflicting thoughts on the SAP value.

Red turkey castor used in place of regular castor oil

Hi. A friend used red turkey castor oil in place of her regular amount of castor oil for her latest batch of cold process soap. I haven't seen her soap yet but I'm concerned that it would be lye heavy. My reading tells me that that red turkey castor is not saponifiable. Any thoughts? TIA

    Tapioca starch

I use it to bind citrus scents. It does add a bit of an extra slip to the suds.

Heavy lye soap bits won't dissolve when attempting fix via rebatch

So I had a bad soap day ... Citric acid added to oils instead of disolved in water first (it burns when melting oil, don't do it) and then a miscalc of the addtl lye needed to counter act the CA (used 1gm CA x 6.24gm lye, instead of the 10 x 6.24 -and yes I do know better) .... So because a...

    Citric acid "burned" I'm oils

Hi. Have been using CA in my soaps for sometime with no issue other than being careful for boil over when adding lye to the CA / H2O mix. Today I read to add the CA to oils instead to avoid potential boil over. I had 7# of my regular oil mix and added the 67gm of CA, then over very low heat...

    Getting rid of ash

Hi. I had 60+ small soaps made in a fairly intricate mold, which developed ash. I knew steam would sometimes get rid of it but it's a bit time consuming ... So one by one, using tongs, I dipped each into boiling water for no more than a couple seconds and then put on racks to dry. Presto ...
