Want to make a garden soap.... ideas?

That doesn't sound crazy. Here's another idea. Saveonscents has dirt fragrance oil.....maybe a touch of that with whatever veggie themed fragrance you want to use, and you would have a soap that SMELLED like a veggie garden too.

    Newbie here!!

Hope you're enjoying the soaping. Can I make one suggestion? If you decide that you really like the soaping and want to continue, consider investing in some melt and pour base from one of the soap suppliers. Almost any of them is going to be of higher quality than craft store base, and I...

    Tomato juice

I've made tomato bars before....some with tomato paste at trace, some with pureed tomatoes substituting for the part of the water, some for all of the water....and I've done all tomato in place of water AND added tomato paste at trace. All of them turned out lovely. Tomatoes are acidic, yeah...

    Lye to me...

Ummmmm no.....it doesn't sound like you got pure lye. Lye, when mixed into water, will initially get cloudy, and let off nasty fumes, and then get clear and be very hot.

    Newbie here!!

Hello and welcome! :) I would start by reading here in the CP and the Melt and Pour Forum. Also search the tutorials, take notes, and compare them with the advice in your soaping books. Another great place to look is http://www.teachsoap.com . Anne Marie has a lot of wonderful tutorials...

    Sunflower oil?

Quick answer.....no It's great to add with other oils, but you're going to need some hard oils in there to make a stable nice soap. ETA: You can make a respectable first soap with vegetable shortening....it takes less time to trace and you would have a more usable product. :)

    Great Book

I looked at the table of contents, and yes, it does look like a great book...very comprehensive. For those budget minded folks, I think that "The Everything Soapmaking Book" by Alicia Grosso covers almost all the same topics (very well too) for a fraction of the cost.

Why don't my colors ever turn out???

You can also use up those colorants in some HP soap and they will most likely stay true. But I agree with Carebear and the rest.....get thee some true CP colors from a reputable supplier. :)

    Fruit additives.

Well....you can add them as puree and substitute them for part of your water. Don't expect the scent to come through, and you may get some interesting colors. I wouldn't insulate your soap because of the extra sugar....it might overheat, but they should contribute nicely to the lather for the...

Does castor oil leave a film on hair?

Honestly, I really think it depends on the individual's hair. Soap based shampoo bars are a real love/hate thing. I make one with no coconut and 15% castor.....I use a large % of palm to keep it reasonably hard. My mom loves it and it works great for color treated hair. Other people may find...

    New to soaping

Hello and welcome! :) I totally agree....lots of research here and other online soaping forums, ask tons of questions, make tons of test batches and see how they perform just after the 4 week cure AND 6 months later (not all soaps are stable for the long haul and can get rancid and get...
