There is a local place that sells oils for soap making. I already buy my lye there (it's really the only place I can get it locally that I know of) so I thought I would try the oils too. They advertise on their website that 7 lbs of olive oil is approximately 1 gallon. I didn't think about it much; I just ordered it, and picked it up on Monday.

Yesterday I went to make soap, and had some olive oil from another vendor that I used up - there was approximately 1 lb left in that can. I supplemented with the new oil - I needed another pound & a half. That pound & a half nearly drained the gallon jug! I even weighed it again - three times. Every time it came up to the proper weight.

So now I'm wondering if the gallon jug really is 7 lbs ... because I don't know. I didn't get 7 lbs out of it obviously ... it's more like 3 lbs according to my estimates. I thought about re-ordering and then bringing the new jug home to weigh it and check. Also, I ordered coconut oil from them and it has little flecks of black in the very bottom. It's like the bucket was dirty or something before they filled it.

What would you do?

No clue as to why your measurements are off.

However, when you're making soap you need to speak in terms of weight, never volume. Gallons, cups, quarts... they don't really work in soapmaking.
