Hey all. If you happen to live in the States and near a Big!Lots you might be able to find this

IMG_0743.JPG

It’s 7lbs for $12 ($1.70/lb). WSP sells it for $3/lb, so that seems like a really god deal to me.

I see a scale in the picture so I assume you weighed the container and confirmed that it is 7 lb? That's good news. Big Lots used to sell butcher boy 7 pound containers for about that price but suddenly the container started shrinking and the price didn't and then it disappeared from our Big Lots all together. That's new labeling; I wonder if the company was sold. Our Big Lots closed locally but if that's a true gallon for that price it's worth driving half an hour for me to stock up. Thanks for the good news!

@lenarenee I think some Big Lots still have the old labeling, Butcher Boy. Some Big Lots still don't have either. Definitely, call before you go. I hope you can find it. It would be even more worth the trip when they have their next friends & fam sale!

Well, I tried, but the scale doesn’t go high enough, to I weighted myself on a bathroom scalewith and without the oil. The difference was 7lbs. (I’m not going to tell you the starting weight, but it’s 21 lbs less than Jan 2nd. ;)

There offered to set me up with a discount card, but I blew them off. I might could have gotten it for even less. #imanidiot

There is one in the cities, I noticed. They took over the old KMart that went out of business. I was thinking of browsing, next time I am in the neighborhood, which isn't really very often.

My Big Lots sells the 30.5oz containers for $4 ea. I just buy out the whole lot while I'm there. When you consider you are also not paying for shipping and need CO quick its a great buy! But beware and check the freshness dates. Make sure the oil is not past its freshness date.

Now if I only had a good local source for palm. I buy Spectrum palm oil at Kroger. Soaps well, but it’s expensive. Question: if you use GV original (contains tallow and palm), does it eliminate the need for palm in your recipes, or does the increased use lead to odorous results and/or reduced shelf life?

I have not used this before; however, in my search for a local palm oil supplier, I found:
Smart FoodService Warehouse (used to be Cash and Carry):
FIRST STREET ALL PURPOSE PALM SHORTENING# 51988
$35.29 / Unit (50 lb)
They have a website you can see if there is a location near you.

If you would put a link to the product at that price, it would be a lot easier for people to find. It took me about 15 minutes to find this product at their website because there was no link.

Also before getting a price, you have to find a store (of which they are really limited nationwide). Only after choosing a store, do you get a price. In San Jose, Ca. the same product is even less expensive than you quoted. But then, of course if I wanted to order this, I would surely have to factor in the shipping costs. Since I don't live anywhere near one of the stores, and I don't have an account, I cannot determine what that cost would be. But the price before shipping sure looks good.

This is the link to the page I got for the Palm Shortening, however, it really lists a search result on their site, so no real information about the shortening itself: https://www.smartfoodservice.com/search/fullsearch/

I get First Street products at Smart & Final. I've never bought it, but the palm is about $29 for a 50lb cube (highly doubt its sustainably sourced). Smart & Final is definitely a southwest/west coast store though (NV, AZ & CA only I think).
