RM, the way I do it (did it, haven't for a long time) is that I have my oils in my soaping pot and then pour the freshly made lye solution into it as soon as the lye has fully dissolved.

I noticed on the dvd it was smoking when she added the lye and water and I thought, hmmm I wonder if she lets it stop smoking and then she starts adding the shortening and coconut oil?
