Do I need preservative if I want to pack some refined shea butter into small lip balm jars? I read around here that if I don't use water, I don't really need preservative? I just want to know for sure before I give it as Christmas present. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

You don't need a preservative in anhydrous products, so you are safe. The exception is emulsified scrubs, or any other product that does not contain water but is likely to have water introduced into it. HTH!

are you going to just use shea? I make a lipgloss with castor, almond, beeswax, vit e that is nice

Yes I was going to use only shea butter because I love it...and because I did not want to make anything too complicated. I hate dry lips so I put some kind of moisturizer on my lips all day long and shea feels so good on my lips.
I love lip gloss as well...but I bought 50 of these little jars for my lip balm so I better stick with this for now. They were 50 for $16.50 so not too bad and I was ordering some other stuff...so..there you have it. Maybe next time I venture into lip gloss.

have you tried shea butter by itself on your lips? it doesnt feel so good to me anyways. Its not hard to add other oils?

Yes, I use it every day. I use the refined shea butter from WSP and its great.

I have some refined from WSP. Just tried it and yes...it is nice on the lips. I wouldn't have thought to try that.

My shea is pretty hard. I like a glossier lipbalm, but you could melt it and pour into your jars.

I already filled my little containers and I did nnot have to melt the butter at all, I just left it on my kitchen couter to soften and then I used my stainless butter knife to pack it in. I already gave some to my friends and they love it.

WSP refined shea butter is super soft. When I first got it I called them because I didn't believe it was shea butter. Almost like margarine that has set out on the counter.

I mixed some with a little castor and some blueberry lip balm oil. Super yummy.
