This is the last pine tar batch. Maybe. This was 10% pine tar but now I'm curious as to what 20% would do. Hmm.
Here's a pic of the pine tar container just in case some are more visual than others in their purchase searches. Yes, I've resized as some get truly aggravated with me over the size of the pics posted.
Anyway, here tis:

As for the batch #3, well, there is a story that goes along with it, of course. First the story.

The Mysterious Far Far Eastern Sometimes Soap Assistant and Mother of my Children was at work and The Lovely Hand Model in Training was at school so I was on my own. Not always the best scenario.

My intention was to make a very simple recipe, increase the percentage of pine tar, no fragrance or anything else. Yep, simple, straight forward. :D Being known for self discipline in several areas is not one of the hallmarks of my personality, but things went quite well until I glanced up at the window sill (hand stirring - stirstirstir) and spotted a small dropper bottle (stirstirstir) with a Bramble Berry label "Non-Bleeding Cherry".
Still hand stirring and thinking, "This is going well, slow to trace, wonder if I have time?" OF COURSE YOU DO!
Stopped stirring, grabbed the bottle, loosened the cap, threw it in the microwave, quick 10 seconds, took it out, shakeshakeshake because of problems read that someone else had.
Back to the sink, put in a few drops. Hm. Boy, that 10% pine tar is DARK. Little more color. Hm. Nothing. Stirstirstir. Ohh, put some more in. Stirstirstir.

Tell me when it's safe to come out! :x

DANG! Still dark.
Ok, go for it.
(Careful measurement) ONE MISSISSIPPI, TWO MISSISSIPPI, AND JUST A LITTLE MORE. I love science!
stirstirstir! A little color.
Hey, how about a little salt, just for grins. Gotta be quick. Where's my measuring spoons? Ok, how much. Well, just put a great big teaspoon in and a little bit more. It's only 22 ounces. Ok done.
Quick, stir!
AHRRG! Turn on the oven! Forgot it! Quick, ok, got it.
Hey, let's go electric!
WOW! LOOK AT THAT COLOR! UHOHHHHH! Trace coming pretty quick now.
Pour
Pour
Scrape
Scrape
Hey, this might not be too bad.
Quick, take a picture or Hazel will be whining here big time.

Whew! In the oven.
And many of you thought that perfection was only attained through great organization! HAH! 8) What a fun hobby! :D  :D

Here tis:

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Lovely Dennis - you didn't add any silken cat hair to the batch to give a nice feel ? Is that why the cats still in the bag    . Far Far Eastern and DD should love this batch. CUT CUT CUT.

Very nice looking soap! burgundy color? How does it smell?

I am going to look for a feed store around here.

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Can't wait to see the final colour

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Beautiful color! You did a great job with it.

I don't whine...I gripe. There is a difference.

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Careful now...you don't want to push me. I might start using sarcasm which as you know is usually misinterpreted and can lead to confusion, wearing brightly colored tropical shirts and an overwhelming urge to wear slippers with chicken heads on them (then taking a picture of the aforementioned slippers and posting it on the forum).

Oh oh

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Hmm...maybe I did at some point. Naaah...I'm not taking culpability for it. I think it's an innate quirk in your charming personality.

Dennis - You really need to start a blog about your soaping adventures (or misadventures as the case may be). It would be so much fun to read. ManKatt could help you write it.

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Oh Oh OH YESSSSSSSSS!!! Mankat needs a soaping blog! Er, I mean Dennis... ;)

I would totally read that.

Re: Pine Tar Batch # 3 - Simply Amazing! (w/pics)

Don't mean to highjack my own thread BUUUUT, Mankatt is not writing much as he is still recovering from falling in the pool the other day. Silly boy likes to lay right on the edge with his back hanging over just a tad. Well, it finally happened. He went to sleep and rolled over into the pool, woke up and caught himself with his front claws in the concrete. I saw all the splashing and ran out to help but he got out on his own. He's ok, but is still mad because he knows that I and Nelly both saw him. Takes that long haired boy a looooong time to dry. He was soaked from about midway on his hairy fat bod to the tip of his tail. :D

AND NOW...DIRECT FROM THE BEAUTIFUL LAND OF SUGAR WHITE SANDS AND UNGODLY HEAT AND HUMIDITY I wish to present the disastrous results of the 10% pine tar batch #3 picture after cutting. Weird. Not only that, I did a zap test and YUCK! First there was the horrible taste of pine tar :x followed by the strong taste of soap. NO ZAP, but soap poisoning may render me blind.

Here it is, full size, in all its naked glory. Feast your eyes upon the color patterns. I meant to do that.

Poor Mankatt! I bet he was really unhappy until he dried out. Are you sure it was an accident? Could someone have been strolling by the pool and been tempted to give him a nudge with her nose?

That is great looking soap! Yes, my attention is riveted by the color...ooh...look out the window! There's a squirrel in the yard!

the soap looks brilliant Dennis!!! Being completely ignorant of pine tar let alone pine tar soap can you tell me it's 'benefits'? Where do you fin the pine tar? is it difficult to work with?...you've sparked an interest!...by the way Nellie's taste in lab coats looks vaguely familiar! :D thanks for the cut photo!!

Is this pine tar soap for humans? I only ask because you used the pine tar product for horses. Thanks.

Dennis I have to say I so enjoyed this thread. Way too many giggles, poor Mankatt! I love how you're not afraid to experiment and that is the same brand of Pine Tar that I use, I make a Pine Tar Hair & Body Shampoo that is really, really popular and I have one guy that buys them 6 - 10 at a time....

I love the colour you achieved. It would never, ever have occurred to me to try colouring it! Nicely done.

And I see that Hazel has you very well trained
