More than one online fragrance calculator gives a generic percentage for all fragrance types - just like all the soap calculators default to a "suggested" percentage. It sounds like you might have used one of those? Either way, contacting the company to inform them of this problem sounds wise.

As suggested by Dibbles, it is best to use a calculator like EOCalc that gives a percentage specific to the EO. The other option is to use the manufacturer's posted IFRA rate for that specific item. Then enter that number into your soap calc of choice.
The company is BrambleBerry...

I thought it might be. The last time I checked their calculator, it doesn't give percentages that are specific to each EO - just a general recommendation, which I find to be quite irresponsible on their part.

Their actual product listing for clove leaf EO says to use at 1% max in soap. That's still too a bit too high per IFRA or EOCalc.com, but it's at least a lot closer to the safe usage rate than what their calculator says. I'd submit a complaint about that if I were you, including the fact that you had toss a huge batch of soap as a result of their misinformation.

Bramble Berry has begun providing IFRA sheets with their essential oils, but the one for Clove Leaf EO lists the Category 9 max as 5.74%. I assume the information comes from their vendor, but that seems really high. There's always a chance something got mixed up (their website looks to have been recently updated), and that would mess up the numbers in their fragrance calculator, too. If you'd like to ask them about it, I find using the chat function on their website to be the quickest and easiest way to communicate.

BTW, the product listing also mentions "Acceleration and ricing in cold process" — which you have proved, for sure!

Yes! Just got an email from BrambleBerry and they informed me that their record of Clove Leaf EO Max Usage of 5.74% is accurate. Mmmmm…Throw out my soap already though. Not sure how to read this. They sent me their IFRA sheet as well (attached below).
