I watched one video on HP soap and the whole volcano effect that it showed scared me away, lol!

Eeep, I've never had a volcano. As long as you are always pouring lye into water and lye water into oil you should be fine.

I had a broken ankle most of last year so I'm all about figuring out what to do with limited mobility.

Well, the soap will crawl up the pot a bit, but I routinely make 3lb batches in my 4qt crock pot and I HAVE made a 5lb batch in the 4qt, but bought the 6qt to ease my mind a bit because the 5lb batch got too close to the lid for my comfort while cooking. Just make sure you have enough room and it will be fine :) new12soap babysits her HP, stirring it every 5-10 minutes, while I go on about my business and ignore mine until its ready to fragrance, color and mold LOL

I've never understood why people insist on cooking their HP for 3 and 4 hours.

Soap can and will "volcano" if the oils are significantly hotter than your lye, whether you are doing HP or CP. Other things can contribute, like beer or high sugar, but the temps are a big one. Don't overheat your oils!

So sorry to hear baout your accident, but it sounds like you're in good spirits. While you're laid up you might be able to make small batches with a hand stirrer. Or, you know yeah, or not, not the safest position to be mixing lye in. I hope you recover soon, good luck to you!

Sorry about your injury. I know WAY too much about being down when you want to be up and mobile. At least you can do research on your computer about HP or whatever else interests you. I have such a bad back and only 39yrs old. Like blown out discs and blah, blah and so on. You HAVE to stay busy. Even if its just your mind staying busy. HOPE YOU RECOVER FAST!

I have had a bad back for many years too so bad I have to have one of those adjustable beds like they use in hospitals. I'm older than you I will be 51 soon but still it is hard to have bad knees and a back and carpal tunnel as well as tennis elbow really they are from years of standing all day on the job, plus the type of work I do doesn't help. I will be quitting soon and I was hoping I could make money bu making soap. I guess time will tell.

I hope you get well soon! HP is pretty easy. I usually do a batch in my crockpot the same time I do a batch of CP. I did some today, but I forgot about it so it did get some dry spots, but it still looks pretty. I colored it with pink french clay and fragranced with BB's Passionfruit rose. Yummy! If you do make some HP soap while you're laid up, you should post some pics of it!

We're a bunch of old crocks here. I'm 38 and have suffered with sciatica for years and I got plantar fasciitis about three years ago oh my gosh that was horrible. I used to have to psych myself up for the first few steps in the morning, as it was like trying to walk on open scissors. Last time I saw my doctor and complained about the pain I was in I was prescribed Naproxen. This has been a life changer for me as it enables me to carry on WITHOUT pain and for me to do the stretches that enable me to stay that way. Naproxen is not for everyone but maybe those of you living with chronic pain can ask for it and see how it goes. I have not needed one since just after christmas YAY!!!

I'm sorry about your knee. :(

My first soap was a HP in the crockpot. I picked up one up at a thrift shop for $5. I stirred several times during the process instead of waiting until it looked like potatoes and it turned out really pretty with a bit of shine to it.

What about getting a tall stool so you can sit, but still reach your stuff for a CP? I hope you can recover quickly and get back to soaping!

I am in the bad back club also. I had surgery for compressed discs a few years ago, and I am 43. I threw my back out early last week, but it wasn't too bad. I also have fibromyalgia, so there is always some pain in my life.

Yeah, I am making MPs right now and slowly making my way to CPs. I am slowly buying all the stuff I need to be able to CP. I am supposed to head out to the hardware store and get some PVC pipe today. I still need a few other things (a stick blender and I really should get goggles, I am already blind in one eye, so an accident would be bad). I also need to get some ingredients to start with. I hope to start with CPs by mid-March if things work out.

That's wonderful that Naproxen works for you I have tried it and I might as well take M&M's because it does absolutely nothing for me. :-(

Isn't it funny how we all get such different results. Tylenol is like Skittles for me ;) I gave up on all OTC pain meds. I see a Pain Management Dr now. Some great tools that I always tell ppl to ask their dr for are a 1. TENS unit (it has pads you slap on yourself, wherever you hurt. It give a gentle electronic pulse that you adjust to your liking) It REALLY helps! 2. Lidoderm patches (non-narcotic prescription patch) They can be cut down if you want them in a smaller area. I LOVE to use them on my hip that had surgery, low back and also where I have ribs that sometimes pop out of place. It has a gel on the back that has numbing meds that soak into your muscles. So obviously won't make you drowsy or anything like that. I do use strong pain meds as well. Just no getting anything done without it. Some people try eating an 'anti-inflammitory diet'.

I wouldn't make it without my TENS unit! I have scoliosis and usually have some degree of back pain because of it, but the TENS with some cold therapy really helps a lot. I can even soap while using it since it has a little belt clip! Lol!

I've just started naproxen recently because the amounts of ibuprofen they had me on (I think the military has to prescribe you ibuprofen no matter what..haha! :p) were tearing up my stomach.

Yeah, Ibuprofen will tear up your stomach something awful. I used fairly high doses of ibuprofen for a long time to try to deal with migraines and then switched to clinoril. The problem with things like naproxen and clinoril and such is that they are non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and they can do damage to your kidneys if you are on them long term (guess how I know).

I am not sure of other solutions to the problem of chronic pain; I just wish their were better answers and want people to be informed of the risks.

(Sorry for hijacking the thread)
