I've read that unsaponified oils can go rancid in the finished soap. How can I keep this from happening when superfatting at 5%?

5% is actually a pretty standard, dos-safe level to soap with. What kind of oils are you using, and are you doing CP or HP?

CP. I'm using olive, coconut, palm and castor oils, and shea butter.

So you're saying 5% superfat is pretty resistant to rancidity?

Yes and I have soaped 10% most of the time and with those same oils you mentioned Daniel and 1 - 2 years later, still no DOS.

I agree....you should be in good shape with the oils you have chosen.....I would be far more concerned if your recipe had a large quantity of canola, Crisco, corn, or soy (although I've never had problems with those....some people do).

BTW.....sounds like a very nice mix of oils. I use a similar combination, and my soaps are rock hard, conditioning, and last a long time. :)
