Hate making HP Soap!

Once again I remember why I hate making hp soap. We are making soap to donate to an organization that supplies Aids families with personal products. After doing surveys apparently they have found that most of these families find they just do not have enough money left for personal products such as shampoo and soap. Battered women shelters have the same problem and alway are in need of personal products. Anyhoo, I decided to run a few quick batches of hp for donation. My hp always comes out so friggin ugly :cry: but at least it is a nice pistachio butter, lard, coconut oil, shea and castor soap with avocado puree and mallow root extract.

I used to HP everything. Found I can make more soap in less time (at least less time on task) if I CP. However I still manage to come up with plenty of ugly ones to donate. My fave new donation site is like a halfway house for foster kids that age out of the system. And of course the more I donate the more I can make. )

I made my first HP last night - I put it in the other room just now to cure in time, and now it's back in the dining room because I missed it! It looks so rustic and homely. I would say that HP is far from ugly, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

No you can't make all the pretty swirls, but I love the marbling in HP soap. I have this Sweet Orange & Patchouli soap where you can see all of the orange color from the sweet orange oil swirled throughout. Quite pretty. You can't beat the cure time!

That is so good to hear that you have a place for donating also. There are just so many that cannot even purchase soap. I can run 3 batches at a time of hp with my 3 crock pots. Working on a tree tea, cedarwood and lemongrass now for the donations.

I do not find cure time to be shorter in fact for me it takes longer since I do a big water discount with my cp soap. What I am hp'ing now cannot come out pretty colors from all the butters and goat's milk. Oh well Forgot to add that I was using up fo's that do not cp. Now that the pots are out I am going to go ahead and hp the tea tree soap

i tried hanger swirl once on a hp and the swirl came out more like a blur instead of pretty swirls, lol. i think the key to 'less rustic' is lotsa water and SL. i have a few hps that are pretty smooth, almost like a cp. full water does matter (in my case, 3:1), once i tried to lessen it to 2.8:1 and it wasn't as fluid as i wanted. if your recipe is high on hard oils, then use more water and more SL.

More water longer to dry out...I changed my mind on my tea tree. Got it all ready in the crock and decided to pour before it cooked. It is now in the freezer since it was much warmer than I usually soap and I am a bit concerned it may overheat. We shall see. LOL, still might get the crock pot treatment

yep. but what can we do? my smoothest hps are the ones with sooo many water in it, and yes it does take some time to harden up. they do need a bit of babysitting everyday, putting them next to a fan during the day and take them inside my bedroom for A/C at night. i have bars that are 10 days old, and they're still pretty soft, i can pinch them and make a dent.

i guess in a sense, it kills the purpose of hp, that is to put so much water in it. esp when you need the soaps quickly.

Had a re-batch with so much water the other day had to leave the lid off the crockpot & let it evaporate. Was worried it would leak out of my wood mold.

Soaps are always appreciated at the food bank & local clothing closet. To some handmade soap is the biggest luxury item they have had in a long time.

Yes it is. Sometimes I think, we take having all the soap we want for granted

I always have enough soap to donate, and love being able to do so, But am I the only one that doesn't enjoy the process of making hot process soap? I would rather wait for the soap to cure, than the time it takes to cook the soap. I love getting the soap in the mold and knowing that I am done.

I do HP because my EOs don't get killed by the lye. I always feel like my HP soaps don't match up to the pretties made with CP. But then I still do have the problem of some people saving my soap and not using it, I guess it would only get worse if I had prettier soap!

Best way to rebatch soap is to add one or two tablespoons of handmade liquid soap to your soap scraps, turn your crockpot on and watch it all rebatch in a few minutes

I actually like the look of my CP soap, especially as I'm targeting men primarily. Coupled with the benefits when it comes to scents - the extra time and effort start to seem worth it.

Not everything can be HP'd, though, and maybe when it comes to lady soaps I'll do CP, but I think maybe just HP swirls will be enough over here. Time will tell!

I have only HP rebatched soaps and liquid soaps. But I can assure you I would not volunteer for HP on a regular batch of bar soap. I do not enjoy the process at all. And I like smooth soap.

I don't hate HP but I don't enjoy it either. I will only do it when I want to control my SF oil. I do however, hate rebatch and will never ever do it again unless I have a complete mess of a soap that is unusable.

I meant to say that I like HP soap, as I'm targeting men! Makes more sense that way.

I think for really smelly soap, HP is the way to go. I just very little EO in this batch and it still smells good - not great, but much better than if it had been CP.

I love HP! I make soap for my family and friends and do not sell, so the quality of the soap is really my main focus. Also, I'm impatient. Some day I will play with pretty CP swirls though.
