Is it ok to make breastmilk soap, or has anyone tried to do it?
Do you think it is a stupid idea?

I would like to know who is pro and who is against it :)

Honestly, if I was still nursing (which I did for almost 6 yrs straight, LOL) I'd probably try it but only for my kids' (or my own) use. I imagine it would be very mild. Breast milk is good for a lot of things, I'm just not sure how much of it's properties would remain in soap.
I am extremely pro-breastfeeding and the thought of BM soap doesn't freak me out in any way, however I would imagine the vast majority of Americans would feel differently. :) It's a much more personal thing than animal milk. I wouldn't offer anyone else a drink of it, LOL, nor would I drink it myself, but it was definitely wonderful to be able to give that gift to my kids. Breastmilk in a mild baby/child soap for one's children? Don't see a reason why not. :)

This is one of this topics that does the rounds every now and then.
Breastfeeding is one of those issues that everyone (qualified or not ) seems to have an opinion on.
While I breastfed each of my babies, and I think it's miraculous stuff, I have no desire to soap it.

This might sound gross to some of y'all, but I was brave enough (or just plain curious enough 8) ) to taste my own back when I was breastfeeding our son (I expressed a little bit out into a cup). It was good stuff- the best milk I ever tasted. It was very pleasant and mildly sweet, and it tasted almost as if it had the tiniest whisper of a hint of vanilla in it. No wonder the wee bairn loved it so much. I've tried a sip of formula once, too, and all I can say is BLECH! That stuff is nasty tasting! I'm not anti-formula by any means, for it saves many a baby's life whose circumstances prevent breastfeeding for whatever reason, but all I can say is that God knew what he was doing when he made mommy milk. Man's attempt at creating a comparable substitute can never do justice to the real thing.

Would I make soap with it? I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, but I'd do it only as a special gift for personal use for a mommy who specially requested it.

IrishLass :)

Didn't say I didn't taste it, LOL, but not by the glass. Of course I tasted it, it's what my kids drank for the first 2-3yrs of their lives. :D Too sweet for me personally.
To each their own, I could see this being very special to someone and I could see people being totally grossed out by it. I'm not about to have another baby so I can try it though, LOL!!

I soaped my milk that was on the verge of being past what was recommended for use it and it is the creamiest, gentlest soap. It seems to get better and better with time. I use it head to toe on the wee one and he's never had a rash or cradle cap, and his mild eczema went away. My husband loves it and prefers to use it 99% of the time. It has beautiful color, texture, and bubbles. It conditions and rinses beautifully. I am going to make more with the rest of my frozen milk too. I will probably try it with fresh milk as well.

I highly recommend making it to anyone with an open mind and wants to try it.

PS) I tasted my own milk as well and while I wouldn't drink it on a regular basis by the cup, I can totally see why the kids love it. It is mild and sweet. It's a little psychologically weird to taste my own, but then I think: Who's would I rather taste? No one's LOL

I've been thinking about this post all day. When I first read it, the concept totally grossed me out. As a matter of fact, someone (in the referred thread) posted my EXACT first reaction ... EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

But then I remembered in the movie, "The Fight Club", they raised money by getting human fat from a cosmetic surgeon that did liposuctions, made soap from it, and sold it for 75.00 a bar. Why didn't this gross me out???

Reading about how some people think that they would make it for their own children, sounded perfectly NORMAL to me. So I guess I would have to say that for my own, I'd do it. (of course, I can't lactate, but if I could, I would .... I and I would make more money from being the first guy that DID, and wouldn't have to sell the soap!). (Hope that's not TMI for this forum :) )

I made it already, and it turned out great. I put some chamomile and orange zest powder in it, and it is a very mild hard soap with a lot of lather. It turned kind of medium brown.

I've never tried it and never had access to bm, but it's definately something that curiosity will get me on one day if I am lucky enough.
