We have craptastic city water (sometimes you can really smell the chemicals in it) which is why I always use distilled water. .

We have horrible city water, too. Every morning when I wake up and brush my teeth I always think to myself, "Hmmm... what flavor will the water will be today, I wonder?' Some days it's rotton-eggy sulpher, some days its mold, some days it chlorine. In my shower I have one of those filter things on the shower head in order to shower with just in case.

We used distilled water for drinking and also for soaping & lotionmaking- and sometimes bottled spring water if the store is out of distilled (although I only make my lotions with distilled). In this town, the store runs out of distilled water faster than all the other bottled waters on the shelf.

When you add the water to the lye, it heats up right?

Hi Ganiggle and welcome to the forum. I love your name! I don't know the answer to your question but I did want to remind you that you should never add water to lye. It should be the other way around. Always add your lye (slowly) to your water or else I'm told you'll get a volcano. I wouldn't want you to get hurt.

Or if you already knew this, then nevermind! hehe :)

Hehe I have heard that! But I am still very new to this and haven't done it yet so I appreciate the reminder. Thank you for the kind welcome!

Welcome Ganiggle. I like saying your name! Ganiggle, Ganiggle, Ganiggle....

Thank you! I'm quite fond of my name too hehe. Plus it's a word I made up, so my user name is ALWAYS available. Practical, AND fun to say!

Distilled water is void of minerals, lye doesn't effect the mineral content.

That said, I can't tell the difference - so I use tap.

Welcome! Hope you like it here! :D

I used distilled but ran out a coupla times and just used tap water. To be honest I didn't see any difference. And yet, I still buy distilled water because I enjoy throwing my money away.

LOL. Same.

:D

In the soap I dont see or feel any difference.
But
using tapwater, the lye water is never clear - obviously due to the high amount of calcium in it. I live on the seaside and all water in the Hague is filtered in the dunes along the coast.

BTW when I made beer soap, and used the beer in stead of water to make the lye is was crystal clear for the first time ;)

So using beer is a far better option if you like to throw money away apart from the fact that is is alcohol abuse

London Tap water is a bit hit and miss. So I use rain water. My sensitive tropical fish live in it and they are healthy, so I guess it is fine. I also have plenty of snails in my fish tank, so likely there are no heavy metals in it.

If I have to have distiled water, I would go to a fish shop and buy RO water. Much cheaper than bottled.

By the way, drinking distilled and RO water is very bad for you, as it leaches calcium and magnesium out of your bones. If your tap water is really bad, stick to bottled water, preferably one with a high mineral content. It prevents brittle bones when you are older.

RO water = reverse osmosis I presume?

I make my herbal tea only with distilled water. Would you happen to have a link to a site that I could read up on it?
