I need to make soap tomorrow - Someone please help me. I will be a first timer. I want to make HP crock pot soap so it will be ready to sell on Saturday. I have Coconut oil and olive oil...is there a recipe to share? Can I use the same recipe for CP as HP??
Help me please. Thanks so much.

It wont be ready by saturday, and please dont sell til you know what youre doing. Yes, you can use the same recipes for both cp and hp.

I wouldn't dream of selling any soap that was not safe and of good quality. I have all the M & P stuff in my booth but what I love is "Real" soap - the age old kind. I know how to zap test and I know how to check pH so please understand that I am not a nut - just have quite a few references that said when you hot process, 4 days is enough time to cure...of course you end up with much better, the longer it sits.

OK so despite what the book says - most here are telling me that it won't be good enough by Sat- even if this batch goes perfectly. It does seem like most everyone who comments does CP and we all know that has to cure much longer.

I so appreciate your comments and assistance and will be soon batching and PRACTICING so these bars can cure and perhaps be ready later in the season....unless someone weighs in and tells me they HP and use it in the first week. Thanks guys.

I've been doing some HP lately. The thing is, technically, it's safe to use right away. The problem is that it's not at it's best. I used one of my HP bars after a couple of days and then again after about 10 days and the difference is amazing. I don't know why, but it is. When I use them before curing, they don't bubble as nicely and dry out my hands a bit (I test on my hands only first). After a cure, they get milder and more bubbly. So, if you want your customers to get an accurate idea of how great your HP soaps are, you really need to let them cure a bit. I don't think anyone here is trying to discourage you from doing HP or selling it. They just want to help you be successful when you do. :)

Forgot to add that giving them a cure will help them harden and make them longer lasting.

Oh yes, yes, Nancy - I understand... I wish I could covey a voice tone with my posts - I don't feel discouraged. I feel all are trying to be helpful. I know what you guys mean about the cure.
My situation is a bit different. I sell at a very small local Farmer's Mkt where I have a specific customer who asked me to make lye soap - IF my batch turns out - and IF all goes well - I will take her a few bars and she will be told they are not ready (just wanted them safe to handle and so on) She is traveling and won't be able to come by my booth later this season. :(

But I really want Palm oil, locally, now and I can't seem to find it so it looks like I will not be soaping this week - unless I can get the Palm oil.

You guys are all great! :D

You are so new to soap making that you need advice on even the most basic of recipes, yet you want to sell your soap to the public?
You need to slow down; do your research, gather your supplies and equipment then start experimenting. You should have a minimum of 2 years research and development under your belt before you even consider selling.
Selling your soap is very exciting and rewarding but it takes time and experience.

Sounds good. But really, this stuff isn't MP - there are more things that could go wrong and a biggie is DOS which is an issue in CP and HP. Which can take months to show up. I'd suggest not selling HP soap (or CP) until you know your formula and your processing consistently produces a stable product which doesn't develop DOS and whose fragrance stays true, etc.

Just MY recommendation. Not a rule. Not a law. But in all fairness to your customers (as well as your reputation and those of soapmakers everywhere) I'd suggest you think long and hard.

I will second this. I wanted to get started early and sell soap right away. I did with a small batch. I wish I had waited. I have a lot of chemistry experience, so it wasn't that something dangerous happened like too much lye or someones skin fell off, it was just that I was trying many different recipes and different oils without experimentation and I ended up embarrassed with the product I sold. Now, for the soaps that I do sell, I only have one recipe. One! I am working on other recipes but they aren't close to ready, and the people I sell to are only people I know personally. I don't try to sell online, in stores, or anything like that (save for facebook to let my friends know what is ready :D ) But these soaps that I am selling are many batches and many months later than the other batch that I sold.

Chay: Though your tone I feel, is meant to be condescending - thanks for your concern. I really have done research over the past 4 years. I have made soap WITH someone - (but we never did HP) I have been under cancer treatment and this is the first time I am well enough to do it on my own. I didn't NEED advice on a simple recipe as I have one in mind - just WANTED to hear what people had to say and see what recipe they liked of found to be most "no-fail" (although we know that you can have made a batch 10 times and have it gone well each time and then the 11th time- it's a bit different)

I was not exactly planning on selling to the "public" but in a small farming co-op where friends sell and trade with one another. I do feel this is a bit different. However, because of cautions and admonishments here I have seen the error of my ways and I won't even HOPE to sell it for a long, long time - I will stick with selling what I have been and just make other soap for my own pleasure.
