Берестовый деготь means Birch Tar. If you see Эфирное масло some where on the label, it's essential oil...I think. It's been years since I took Russian. Maybe someone with better knowledge can answer.

Can I use only a small amount like I would EO even though it's birch tar? It smells very, very strong.

I made the soaps with a small amount of birch tar, less than I would use EOs (around 1%), and the smoke/fire scent is still overwhelming, hopefully after a long cure it will smell less. I can't imagine a soap made with 20% birch tar being usable with how strong 1% smells.

I'm pretty sure what you have is EO, which is why it smells so strong still. Much more concentrated than the pure tar.

For pine tar, do you have a tack or feed store nearby? Pine tar comes in cans as a treatment for horses hooves. I used Farnam brand on my horses, and Bickmore brand is also frequently used by soapers.

It makes a lot of difference. We have a boatload of birch trees around our house. My hubby says he can tap one of the trees for sap/tar. I would rather have the real thing as a local product than buy an essential oil.

EG: If it works, I'll send you some.
Is not the sap the tar is made from rendering the bark in a very hot fire I did some today you can make syrup with the Sap like you do with maple
