    Another Brit

Hello and welcome! :) Sounds like you had a lot of fun on your first excursion into soapmaking, and that combination of oils should make quite the nice soap! Can I suggest that you unwrap your soap and let it be exposed to open air for the first four weeks. You want to cure any extra water...

Which bar has been your favorite to use?

My own personal favorite to use is my 100% coconut, 15% superfat soap with coconut lime FO. Love that stuff!

    laundry bar soap

Fels Naptha contains what they call Stoddard Solvent (mineral spirits). The petroleum oil binds and dissolves the oily stain so the soap can wash it away. I used to buy the mineral spirits at the art supply store until I found out that kerosene degreases as well. It's much cheaper and I don't...

    Bacon Dripping Soap?

Please be careful if you use actual turpentine....actually, just don't use it indoors....it gives off explosive fumes, not as bad as but similar to gasoline! The mineral spirits over in the art supply sections of most larger sto  res don't. Turpentine scares me indoors. Edited to...

    What temperature range prevents gel?

I used to gel, and then I found that my fragrances hold up better if I don't, particularly Eucalyptus EO. Fragrance oils also don't morph as much for me....they smell much more like they did out of bottle. I also like the softer look of ungelled soap, so again, personal preference.

    Curls and Soap Balls

They will fuse with the soap, but they will still be very visible. If you want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE that they don't change at all, you can always put your soap in the fridge and not gel it. Give it an extra day before you cut and give it a few more days to keep it from zapping. I have used...

Do you melt your rebatch in oven?

I'm in the minority here, but I add just enough milk to moisten my shredded soap, and then I heat it, covered in the microwave on 50% power until the shreds look translucent.

    New Deodorant

Several of us on another forum have been trying something new as far as deodorant. After widespread testing, there are many of us that have discovered that plain old Milk of Magnesia is a remarkably cheap and effective deodorant! Simply apply after bathing, let dry, and it keeps the stink...

    question about scents

They should be good. I've had nothing but good luck with Brambleberry (and Bittercreek North too).

    DIY Household Cleaners

I take my soap scraps, ugly soaps, etc and shred them until I have about a lb of them. I simmer this in about a gallon of water until they're completely dissolved and then stir in some washing soda. If they're heavily superfatted, I will stir in a small spoonful of lye. I let it cool and...

    flunked zap test

If you can find one in your budget, get a scale that measures in grams rather than ounces. I find that my smaller batches are much more consistent when I use grams. :)
