    Water Creamation

This was on the BBC World service. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0511lvq Basically they take your body, put it in a pressure chamber, and pump in a KOH solution under pressure and heat. (The pressure reduces the amount of heat needed to speed the process). Once all the fleshy bits...

    Lye safety .... again.

I heard a report on the BBC World service about water cremation which uses KOH. I will start a new thread in the general area to not hijack this... but it is fascinating.

    SMF June Challenge Peacock Swirls

Here is my first try. The soap was too fluid and the colors became very muddy. The second try was today. Looks alot better. Can't wait to cut it.

What do you think of this recipe please?

Actually I prefer as a % of batch size - since I use metric measures exclusively with my soap.

    Oily soap issue

Blend could refer to it being a blend of different grades of olive oil.

    Lye safety .... again.

We are not upset with you. We understand how much mis-information is out there. We see it daily. We ARE worried about your health and well being. We are glad that you were not seriously hurt and we want to educate you so in the future you know the proper way to react. Have fun soaping!

    Emulsifying wax help

It has only been 5 hours, and most of us in the US were in the middle of our work day. First of all, the best place to get info on lotion ingredients is http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/ Specifically http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.ca/2009/10/emulsifying-systems-e-wax-polawax-and.html...

    First time, not tracing

NakedSoap- Susie is right in that we need to know your full recipe. Also where did you get your alkali, is it sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide
  10. K

    Lye safety .... again.

You don't want the NaOH crystals sitting on your skin, as they will draw moisture from both the air and your skin to create lye that will then start turning your flesh into soap. But that takes time. And it sounds like you washed it off before it got to that point. The most important part...

    Honey

Short answer is yes. But some people think it better to take a bit of the water from the lye, mix it with the honey to thin it and then put that in your oils and blend. Then you add your lye.

Would like a recipe for a simple Castile-like soap that cures fast

Ok first, if you claim that Castile is 100% olive oil, you have already told us your recipe. Second, your soap is not cured in 3 - 7 days. HP is safe to use as soon as it is finished cooking, the chemical reaction with the lye and fat has finished - but HP needs to cure as much as any other...

    Palm Oil Question

I don't. This practice comes from the fact that the fatty acids in palm have very different melting points. So if you melt it and let it cool slowly, the FA with the higher melt point solidify first making some areas of the oil more of one FA than the other. Some find this uneven...

    Glycerin Allergy

Well none of us are doctors. If he has been to a doctor, and told he is allergic to glycerin I would not argue. If he has self diagnosed - well. I probably still would not fight - but I might not believe him either. Well, I am not saying what he is allergic to. All I was saying is that...
  16. K

    Glycerin Allergy

Yes, but is incorrect to say that the allergy is to the glycerin. If you extracted glycerin from lard soap and glycerin from palm soap they would be identical. I am not saying that the test of making a soap from different oils is invalid. I am saying that glycerin from lard being DIFFERENT...
  17. K

    Glycerin Allergy

Because the reaction is not to the glycerin. It is to something else - maybe created along with it - but still not to the glycerin itself.
  18. K

    Glycerin Allergy

This makes no chemical sense. Glycerin is glycerin: C3H8O3 You can not tell if the atoms come from lard, palm, or whatever. So, if it is the source makes a difference in the allergy - then it is caused by either the source - or one of the other byproducts of producing the glycerin - not...
