Last week I made a batch of Zany's No Slime Castile soap, as Bastille soap with 15% coconut and 5% castor. I thought it would be fun to see how this batch performed versus other formulations which I prepared over one year ago. Recognizing it is completely ridiculous to expect much from any 1 week old soap, not to mention a bastille soap, that was not about to stop me!
Method:
Each dry soap was used for 5 seconds in running warm water (110F) to evaluate for lather appearance and subjective perception of the feel of the lather.
The contenders:
Castile soap prepared 1/1/2021 using 100% olive oil with added sodium lactate at 5% SF and water:lye of 2:1 and added mica colorants and fragrance.
Bastille soap prepared 1/28/2021 using 70% olive oil, 25% coconut oil and 5% castor oil with 5% SF and 1.8:1 water to lye with added sodium lactate and colloidal oatmeal.
Bastille salt water soap prepared 12/21/2020 using 70% olive oil and 30% coconut oil 0% SF, 1.8:1 water to lye with 2 tsp of table salt dissolved in 2.5 oz of the lye water and added at light trace. Added fragrance and mica colorants.
ZNSB soap prepared 2/25/2022 using 80% olive oil, 15% coconut oil and 5% castor oil. Sea salt and sodium bicarbonate brine prepared per Zany's Recipe was used for lye water preparation at 0% SF and 1.7:1 water to lye. No added colorant or fragrance.
The results:
Castile Soap: Lather is still excessively slimy. Fairly creamy lather with little bubbles and a very gelatinous feeling and appearance.
Bastille soap:
No slimy sensation, lather is bubbly and slightly creamy. This bar had been used previously, but had not been used for several months. Nicely performing lather in appearance and sensation.
Salt Water Bastille:
Somewhat gelatinous lather, with fewer bubbles. Lather is creamy enough to be acceptable to use. These soaps are slightly brittle. Overall less slimy than the castile soap, but still visibly slimy lather.
ZNSB:
Quite bubbly lather with only moderate creaminess. No gelatinous feeling or appearance of slime. Quite similar in both lather appearance and sensation to Bastille soap from 1/28/2021 despite being 1 week old.
Preliminary conclusions:
At the 1 week mark, ZNSB (15% coconut) performed quite similarly to 1 year old bastille soap with higher coconut oil (25%) and superfat (5%). One year old castile soap continues to be excessively slimy. 1 year old bastille (30% coconut) soap prepared with 0% SF and with table salt continues to have moderate slime.
Will continue to update performance of ZNSB soap as it ages, but at 1 week it performs exceptionally well and and has only slightly less creamy lather than the one year old bastille soap.
