I've recently read about dual lye soap recipes for castile soap, and also recently about Zany's no slime castile recipe:

Zanys soap is supposed to make for a hard soap with no slime that cures quickly. Dual lye soap is supposed to make for a soap that has no slime. Dual lye soap, however, will also make for a slightly softer soap with better lather.

So one would assume that the KOH would somewhat cancel out the hardness of the salt, while still having a soap that cures quickly and has no slime and better lather. Has anyone tried this?

I have many tried it, but was wondering the same thing. I do have a test batch of dual lye Castile curing. If you try it, please report back.

I've never heard that dual-lye soap reduces slime, only that it makes the soap more soluble, which makes it easier to create lather.

I suppose the first (reduced slime) could be a side effect of the second (greater solubility)?

Sorry! This should read “I haven’t tried it, but was wondering the same thing.”

FWIW, @AliOop, I just tried a piece of the 95% NaOH: 5% KOH castile test batch I have curing. It is only three weeks old, so this should be interpretation with caution:

1) It is SO nice!
2) Dense creamy lather. Gentle, emollient, non-drying. Already very hard, but dissolves quickly in water. Still a little slimy, but nothing like other castile/bastile recipes I’ve made.
3) I’ve never really liked castile/bastile soaps. This completely changes my mind. I could get excited about making this.
4) I think I’m going to have to try NaOH/KOH Zany version.

Sounds good! My good friend's favorite soap ever is ZNSB made with 80% OO, 20% PKO, goat milk (powder), and sorbitol. I am not an OO-soap lover, but even I think it is decent. I may have to try it with dual lye just to see what all the fuss is about. ;)

I figured it was worth a shot while I was playing with KOH. Honestly, the results surprised me. I did use 3% sodium lactate, 1% sucrose, 1% sodium citrate, and 1% arrowroot powder mixed with 5% lavender EO.

Hehe I was confused by your first reply.

My plan is is make three small batches: One regular ZNSC, one castile with 5 % KOH, and one ZNSC with 5 % KOH :)

Yesterday I was supposed to make a ZNSC batch of 250 g oils. I mixed the water with baking soda, salt, but also sugar and citric acid. I usually have some sugar and citric acid in my soaps. This however reacted quite interestingly. The solution turned into a gooey, jelly-like mess, and the lye generated no heat. Absolutely dead. The lye just lied in the goo in small white clumps. I have never seen anything like it.

It took a few tries before i figured out what the problem was. I removed the sugar and the citric acid, and I then had a regular lye-water reaction with plenty of heat. When I excluded the citric acid, I however forgot to remove the extra lye. So unfortunately my ZNSC had something like -10% superfat
