Why do I do this to myself? I've tried single cavity molds before and hated them. So, why did I just buy more? Why is my soap hopelessly stuck in the @($&^ing! mold? GGGRRR!!!!

Anyone want some very gently used molds? /sarc

Lol, what molds are they?

There are ways to do CP in SCM with success. Depends on the mold.

yeah, i have a shelf full of single cavity molds, and almost never use them. i've usually had success with spraying with pam or similar, then wiping out all the excess with a paper towel (don't want any extra oil to saponify in while they're cooling). then after 24 hours or so, pop in the freezer for 15 minutes then unmold.

i've had some batches, though, that were too soft, and they NEVER came out of the molds no matter how many weeks i let them sit. grrrr. into rebatch or sugar cubes they go...

I got the molds from Southern Soaper's going out of business sale. These ones: http://southernsoapers.com/cart/oval-p-1517.html I've always wanted oval soaps and against my better judgment ordered some. I did 90% coconut, 5% shea butter, 5% cocoa butter with a 20% lye discount. The soap is as hard as a rock, but won't budge. I sprayed with pam before pouring and made sure the soap gelled. What a PITA!

I actually used the mold as an experiment. I made a log of soap at the same time and it's nicely sitting on its' shelf curing away. It was a little tough to cut with my tank 20 hours after pouring.

I'm going to try to make my own oval PVC molds. I've had some success getting a soap log out of PVC pipe.

I have had some recipes come out of single cavity molds perfectly with no prying, crying or swearing and others that had to be left in for over a week. It must have something to do with the oils used and water content. Decided to only use them for test batches, too unpredictable for me. I'm just as likely to mess up a log though, with my impatience.

I don't like the plastic type individual molds cuz it can be hard to get the soap out (freezer works well, usually) but I do like the silicon type a lot.

Well...those would be good for salt bars! Have you tried that yet?

And yes, It does depend on your superfat, water amount and oils used.

Some people use a bit of beeswax to help with unmolding.

The recipe I used (posted) comes out of a pvc pipe for me with no problems.

I've made salt bars, not to my liking. Bees wax is a good suggestion, but I ditched it years ago due to the effect it has on lather.

Plan B is to leave the soap in the mold, give it dirty looks and hope it comes out sometime in the next decade.

I use those plastic molds ALL THE TIME. Secret?? Get a little mister/spray bottle and put MINERAL oil in it. (does not saponify). Warm up the bottle prior to spraying....I just set my little bottle in very hot tap water 'cause my water is super hot. Just mist the molds with mineral oil before pouring and it works almost every time. There have been the occasional ones I'd have to pop in the freezer for 1/2 hour, but then they came right out too. Try it, it works! :D

great suggestion, jadiebugs! guess i'll buy some mineral oil and dig out the molds again, cuz some of them are SO, so pretty and i get requests for them. thanksssssss!!!!

lol! dirty looks....

I am currently trying to get soap out of one of these molds right now. I did NOT spray with mineral oil.....experrimenting.....

the little SOB will NOT come out! One corner remains stuck after freezing, hot water, etc.....

ugh....

guess now I will try the dirty looks....will report back how it works

Sharon -

How do you get the mineral oil off the soap? Or doesn't it stay on the soap?

Thanks

For the most part it stays on the mold. I mean when I unmold then wash them they are still very 'oily'. I only lightly mist the molds with it. I'm sure some of it is still on the soap, but not enough to worry about washing it off.

I have discovered after my experiment tonight, not using the mineral oil...it was like near impossible to get the soap out. (had to freeze them for 45minutes, then run HOT water quickly over them to get them to release, but small spots still stuck to the mold. ) However, not using the mineral oil leaves the soap shinier. Soap out of the molds sprayed with the mineral oil have a dull appearance....

ETA: PS: The dirty looks did not work I'm afraid....I even gave it the EVIL LYE EYE.....and nothing.....

Thanks for the info Sharon. Someone had mentioned mineral oil before and I had wondered how it was done.

I'm sorry your evil lye eye didn't work.

individual molds

I have a huge variety of individual molds that I successfully do cp goat's milk soaps in. The molds came from Soap Mold Superstore in British Columbia. I do use sodium lactate at 3%. I usually let them sit in the molds for 24 to 36 hours, pop them in the fridge for 30 minutes and unmold them. Perfect - every time, and lots of them are quite detailed. I give them a very light coating of mineral oil using a paper towel when I remember, but I did a bunch of guest soaps here this week without, and they turned out fine. Sodium lactate makes a huge difference.

UPDATE! The dirty looks worked! I left the soap for about a week, then in the freezer for 15 minutes. The soap popped out with a little push of the mold.

NOT going to do that again. I'm going to get some food grade silicon spray.
