Okay, so BB was having a sale on almond butter and me being the noob that I am went ahead and bought some. Well, silly me, I didn't realize it didn't really count as an oil until I went to SoapCalc to make up my recipe and I can't find "almond butter" on it.

So... what do YOU use almond butter for? What do you put it in? What does it add to soap? If I use it, when do I add it?

TIA.

It's a bit spendy, in general, for soaping but it certainly CAN be soaped. It's SAP is very low, indicating it has a LOT of unsaponifiables in it.

SAP (NaOH) 0.98. And unfortunately soapcalc.com doesn't have a comparable oil, so if you want to use it you'll have to do the math yourself.

OR you can leave it out of the math, run the calculator at 0% SF and then use it as your superfat.

I don't know if this helps at all, but Soapmaker lists Almond Butter with a SAP of .098. Pretty low, perhaps you should contact Brambleberry and ask them for the SAP?

Thanks, guys. I'm just dumb and thought "Ohhh, that sounds awesome!" before really thinking about how I was going to use it. Oh well.

Um if you are dumb for that then the rest of us are total DOLTS.

I have made dozens of such purchases over the years, some of which I actually did use, some of which I sold on the classified on various forums, and many of which are still in residence (garage, fridge, cupboard...)

Butters in particular seem to call to people! (I have hempseed and sunflower sitting somewhere right now LOL)

Thanks, CareBear! When I figure it out, I'll be sure to let you know how it went! Alternatively, if I wanted to dig up all the information (not only SAP value, but acid contents and iodine, too) then I could write to SoapCalc to have it added. Not so sure about that one.

Would love to use it in body butter, but I haven't attempted that yet! Do you have a recipe you would care to share? You can PM me if you want.

Now, another question... if I use the almond butter as my super fat, do I calculate the rest of the recipe in SoapCalc with 0%? Then, for a 5% super fat, do I just add almond butter total to 5% of my total oil weight? Is that how it works?

Thanks, everyone.

Hi, KnitchyFingers! :) I'm new to the board and have yet to make my first batch of soap, but I do know how to google.

I found the following at Snowdrift Farms website. http://www.snowdriftfarm.com/fixedoilglossary.html.

Almond, Sweet Butter - (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil (and) Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil). Almond Butter is derived from sweet Almonds (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis), specifically from the Mediterranean area, and is obtained by cold pressing of selected fruits followed by a full refining process. The natural oil contains essential fatty acids, but also contains unsaponifiables as natural waxes/paraffins, which are collected during the refining and deodorization process and are blended with hydrogenated almond oil to render a “butter-like” consistency. In cosmetic preparations, the feel and behavior of Almond Butter is very similar to that of shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii). Suggested Use Levels: Lotions & Creams: 3-5% | Balms: 5-100% | Bar Soaps: 3-6% | Hair Conditioners: 2-5%.

And here's a recipe using almond butter that I found at Soap Crafter's Inc. http://www.soapcrafters.com/node/388

Creamy Almond Goat's Milk Recipe

I didn't see any other recipes for the Goat's milk Soap Noodles, so I thought I'd post one of mine that was successful.

1 lb Goats Milk Soap Noodles
2/3 c whole milk
1 heaping Tbsp of Sweet Almond Butter
1 Tbsp of almond oil
1 oz (equiv to 2 TBSP) of Almond Fragrance Oil (I used one called Almond Crumb)

Place noodles in a crock pot on LOW or in a 200 degree oven in a glass or ceramic baking dish with a lid. (I used a crock pot)
Melt Almond Butter and Almond Oil.
Add melted butter & oil into 2/3 cup milk.
Pour the milk mixture over the noodles and stir well but carefully.

Cover the dish or crock pot and check noodles after 1 hr. After exactly 1 hour, I added another 1/2 cup of whole milk. Then I stirred, put the lid back on, and Cooked another 15 minutes.

Then I stirred one last time and let cook another 10 minutes.

When the soap looks to be about the consistency of runny mashed potatoes, add your fragrance. Stir thoroughly, but gently.

I prepped my molds with spray oil, and smeared it around with my finger.

Press mixture firmly into your mold. I put it into the freezer for 1 hour 15 minutes, and they popped out easily.

The soap is so rich and creamy that my relatives beg for more!

Hope this helps.
