Okay I have been able to source Lard no problem but the tallow that is sold in coles and woolies is stated to be a mix of animal fats???? I am thinking possibly some lamb sheep fat mixed in?? I would love to source some 100% beef fat for soaping :) and could I go to the butcher and possibly render my own as I guess it would just be a matter of melting down and filtering any bits. I am keen to try tallow and lard as have never ventured into using either of these.

Just go to a butcher and render it yourself :D

I love tallow... I ran out and am using up the last of my palm and the bars aren't as hard...the lather is better too (on the tallow bars).

I'm not sure where to buy tallow but you can buy suet easy enough. I tried with suet and also with just fat from the butcher and rendered it myself. It makes awesome soap but I don't know if I'll ever have another go at the rendering again the smell is fowl!

I keep hearing that! When I rendered, it smelled like a beef roast cooking lol

I rendered my own years ago when we had our own butcher shop and wouldn't do it again for all the tea in China - its vial.
Just asked dh about finding tallow and he said you can't buy it as it all goes to lever and kitchen for their use.The bonies use to come every couple of days and pick up the bones and fat for rendering - they must sell it to the bigger companies. :(

I'm surprised too when I see this....I have not experienced any foul smells when I render tallow. Smells like I'm making supper! :)

I just did a search - tallow in Australia and this came up -

www.tallowproducts.com They are in Botany Sydney.

Also - tallow Australia came up and there's one in Ashgrove Qld.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Relle I so remember buying beef dripping many years ago used to be what everyone cooked the roast potatoes in :0). I was eyeing up the duck fat at the supermarket, wonder if anyone has tried it!!!!!!

I've made a soap with the "FryMaster".... Which is supposedly 'palm oil'. Worked just as good.

There's a few sites online where the soapers use Superfry. But yeh, I dunno... the ingredient list's a bit vague stating only 'animal fats'.

I know Lard and Tallow are from different animals, but what would be the difference between using one over the other?

Just curious is all....

Would be interesting to know how long you both rendered for... I can't remember the exact time frame of mine but I do remember for the first maybe four hours or so I thought gee this isn't so bad and thought those who had said it was gross must have weak stomachs or something...then I hit a point where the smell just changed and just kept getting stronger and more permeating....ugh still makes me shudder thinking about.

That said everyone should try it once! (unless your vegan lol)

I certainly don't have a week stomach working in a butcher shop and I still say it stinks.

I did around 3 lbs at a time I think, low heat in the oven. Look a long time, but I think that might have been what made it smell yummy instead of nasty lol.

Lyn, here's how it works:

melt (add water and a bit of salt to it) - strain - cool
cut off hard fat that is on top (there will be watery stuff underneath to toss)
remelt fat (add a bit of water) - strain - cool

If it's not pure (clean) enough, repeat again
