Lyn, there's a butcher at a place called Maclagan Qld, they have a small rendering plant there, not sure if they still have it running though due to not being able to get workers but last time i was there is was going. They may sell it. Its somewhere we go thru regularly so I could pick it up for you if they have any. Worth a try. Maybe google it. Not sure if its just beef though so you'll need ot ask them. Hub says if you want chicken tallow to try Inghams, brissy I think. Retired butcher in the house...lol... he's happy to talk fat... been waiting for him to come home so I could ask.
Also, wonder if you rang thru to who ever manufactures Superfry and ask them what they put in it. There may be a call centre number on the packet. It could be that they say animal fat but just aren't being specific. Hub reckons its all beef but I wouldn't take his word for it IYKWIM.
I've not rendered fat but I've smelt a rendering plant....oh my.

Supafry is supposed to be tallow. I wouldn't render my own for all the tea in China either. Safeway also have a No-name version of Supafry. It worked fine for me. I tried dripping too but that smells and the odour went through to the soap a bit and I didn't like it.

Lard is pig fat and has a low melting point. Tallow is much harder and takes longer to melt.

Wow thanks Amy I thought yeah just melt down strain and off I go LOL think for sure it will be sourced outside my kitchen :0)
Nat I see Coles stock Duck Fat now that would be interesting :0) Ha we could start a stall of Inghams soaps fragranced with Garlic and called Kiev :0)
I think that is a great idea to ring through and ask of the animal fat in the superfry. I am not after a lot just hoping to have a play with it and will be picking up some lard in this weeks shop.
Relle if you think it stinks after working a butchers shop I am thinking it must be pretty bad. My kids would die if I rendered it here at home as they will not eat any fats on meat........Lucas nearly pukes just seeing it so imagine a tray of it melting away in my oven :D .
Hey maybe after christmas we could have a tallow, lard and tallow/lard mixed swap thing happening :D

:D
Crumbed for exfoliation......

Found some Tallow for you today Lyn.
Allowrie make it. Beef drippings. 100%beef on label. I found it in Woolies today.
HTH.

Dripping stinks Natty. I tried it once and hated it because the odour ended up in the soap. I have a very sensitive nose though, so others may be ok with it. On the other hand, Supafry doesn't smell.

Hey thanks Nat :0) Bubbles is the superfry all beef fat? guess at the end of the day it probably isnt a huge issue is it, I am keen to try a tallow and lard mix..............Oh and an awesome Saltbar recipe that Hazel very generously shared. Life is busy at the moment but do hope to do this in the next week or two.

I didn't see this sooner or I would have replied to this. Have you tried Bidvest? They sell oils in blocks and 20lt drums. On their website for their oils it list the ingredients as animal fat but all you have to do is give them a call and ask for the ingredients. I found customer service to be very good. They will hunt up most information for you.

Would be interesting to know how long you both rendered for... I can't remember the exact time frame of mine but I do remember for the first maybe four hours or so I thought gee this isn't so bad and thought those who had said it was gross must have weak stomachs or something...then I hit a point where the smell just changed and just kept getting stronger and more permeating....ugh still makes me shudder thinking about.

That said everyone should try it once! (unless your vegan lol)

forgot I posted on this, sorry! I render mine for 30 minutes. I don't have a large stockpot so have to do small batches...I render 2 1/2 pounds at a time on the stove top. Throw in some salt, boil for 30 minutes, drain and cool...repeat if needed. When I order the kidney suet, I have them grind it up for me...makes it so much easier!
