I can get 50 pound barrels of coconut oil at a local restaurant supply house for $100.00,
and 5 gallons of olive oil for $50.00. I am still searching for large quantities of palm oil.
So far, I haven't been able to find it outside of ordering it on the internet for $35.00/
gallon plus shipping, which is going up all the time. I have found it in some
grocery stores, but only in 16-oz sizes. Any suggestions?

I am thinking about going to tallow as a substitute, as I have a meat-packing plant nearby,
but it is a messy business to render it. People seem to be going towards all vegetable soaps.

AAA Chemicals has palm for ~$450 for a 55 gallon drum, plus shipping from Texas. You'll save a bit on shipping if you can afford a pallet full.

I would like to know what the answer is for that question in the UK, if anyone out there knows!

perhaps you could find an ethnic market that caters to middleeastern and african customers?

in seattle, where i used to live, there was an indian market that sold coconut and palm in 5 gallon pails.

Yes, I'll try - I would sooner buy it in a market than paying postage for buying it online. :)

some other options: look for a wholesale restaraunt/bakery supplier, natural food stores might be able to get it for you at a reasonable price.

many carry red palm oil-very high in beta carotene (vitamin A). it will definitely impart it's color to to your soap tho-anywhere from yellow-orange, peachy pink to reddish brown, depending on your other oils and if your f/o naturally discolor.

Thanks for the suggestions, Heartsong. My daughter lives in Seattle. Maybe it's time for a visit!

At newdirectionsaromatics.com you can purchase 1 gallon for $22.86, 5 gallons for $106.67, or 396 lbs for $900 (not sure how that converts to gallons)

Hi there

I use HOLSUM for Palm Oil - it's a vegetable shortening sold in blocks in the grocery store, similar to Crisco - but it's made from palm oil. Hope that helps.

Have you looked into Soaper's Choice?? You can purchase a 50lb pale of palm oil for $51.00 plus shipping. For me the shipping is only $25.00 which isn't bad for a 50 lb pale to be delivered to my home. I get many of my oils there. Happy soaping!!

Wow! looks like I have more affordable choices than I realized. Thanks, all!
Now on with the shopping!

What a fabulous idea!!! I never EVER thought of ordering through a restaurant supplier... I'm about to start bartending at this new place in Phoenix and I could ask them if they'll order me stuff! BRILLIANT!
