wood mold versus the white plasticy molds/which one has the most insulating factors?
I suppose the thicker the wood the more heat held. Do different types of wood make a difference?
I have been trying to work myself up to making a wood mold out of some un used bee boxes I have still laying around. I would like a thinner higher mold but don't want to pay $50 when I have the wood laying around

Wood molds tend to insulate better in my experience.
Then there's the folding of the liner or the silicone liners that go in to the mold.
I don't know that I would sacrifice a bee box for a soap mold though.
Then again I haven't had an apiary on the place for several years...

I still have two hives at a friends place, with a lot of spares there. I don't even have enough for a whole box ( 2 deep box and 1 honey box piece) and I have had them laying around since I left my farm 3 years ago so I think its fitting they get used for another project.
I finally used one of the silicone sheets from my dehydrator to make a liner for my mold. I use my dehydrator non-stop for about 3/4 of the year but I had more liners than I need to, so......again...its fitting to use one for another project.
how many hives did you run? I think the most I ever did was 4, I am amazed at the people that do it for a living :) . what a job haha. I don't know if I am going to do it this year but my friend is so I get to help :)
thanks for your input!!!!

Not entirely related to the soap mould using a bee box. I started beekeeping last year and have one hive. My folks have a boat at a lake in cumbria in northern england and they sold a boat to a fella who before he retired looked after 1000 beehives. My bees are generally good natured and calm and dont mind me being around but they turned nasty a few months ago and attacked me because i moved the hive while trying to add an empty super for winter. I can forgive them i just hope the queen hasnt died as we are in full swing of our winter now i have been since and they seemed ok so think it was just my fault for being heavy handed while sorting them out. Iv been asked to look after a hive for a local church which is awesome because i was getting kinda bored only having one hive to look after.

Do you guys not call them supers and brood boxes or is that english terms?

yes they are called that--I am not usually good at calling things by the right name haha. your bees probably thought you were gonna take their honey, they can get nasty that time of the year. before I started raising bees if anybody would have told me I would stand there while being covered by bees I would have told them they were goofy. the last place I bought bees sent them to California for the winter to pollinate the almond trees and I really think when they came back they got mixed with the African bees cuz they were vicious

Ah see we have a club beekeeper who sells them and they are the local breed we have cross breeds but they arnt as good during our winters because places like italy have much warmer winters than us brits. And for some reason someone decided it was a good idea to breed english bees with italian bees. We are just in the middle of trying to rid the south of england of the asian hornets. Im guessing you will have them aready in parts of America as the enviroment is far more suited to them than england france is already suffering with them. i read a very interesting article about an english fella living in france trying to keep them away from his hives he had some hives in his garden and they were constantly getting attacked by the hornets but his hives higher up in the mountains didnt suffer the same problem so it would seem its very much climate dependant.

I hope thats all it was because my queen was last years queen so should be around at least another year. I keep my hive in a little village i used to live in about 8 miles away from where i live now a fella my mum got chatting too because she used to walk our last dog past his house that hes been doing up for over 10 years has a plot of land and he agreed to let me keep a hive there. Its got canal bank just a couple hundred meters away, an actual certified meadow just on the other side of a hedge and the plot of land tthey are on hasnt been treated chemically for about 10 years and he lets it just do what it wants so its awesome and unadulterated so i had a full super of honey last year before winter kicked in even though i only got the bees in late June. So happy they seem to be very content and i just love watching them do thier thing absolutly facinating creatures. sorry that turned into a much longer post than i intended. And yes i agree never would of imagined i would ever of started beekeeping. Iv been off sick from work with depression for over a year and a half now and honestly going to the hive really helps me just zone out and has helped me moee than i ever expected it would

I almost bought some from there! I like the thought of DIY but the problem with that is I would be cutting liners all the time so I am leaning towards buying. thanks
You can also buy the liners without the mold, so if you want to build the box to fit you can still DIY that part. The silicone liner needs support.
