I bought some oil this weekend and my batch has orange spots on it--one every single bar. I've never seen dos in person but I suspect that's what it is. I don't know how to post pics--I'll ask flavapor when I see her this weekend. Can you return oil? What is the standard? The batch is 2 oils, olive and palm. I used the olive in 3 other batches that day with no prob.

That does seem very quick for dos to appear, but stranger things have happened. Is it humid where you are?

If your oil is rancid, there actually is a way to salvage it for soap making. Wash the rancid oil with 180 degree brine.

this spot can also have been caused by the soap bar touching metal. Anything other than stainless steel will react with the soap and cause spots. Some very poor quality plastics can do this as well.

Your oil would smell funny if it was off and I agree I have never seen dos occur earlier than week 3 of curing. Did you add colour to the soap, maybe it didn't mix through properly... I have had happen to me when I added it direct to the soap without mixing into glycerine first.

I've made soap with powdered milk that got orange spots in it, I didn't mix the milk well enough and the tiny solids spots burned to orange.

It was a goat milk soap 24 oz olive and 8 palm 8.8 goat milk. I make this recipe every week and never had a problem. I did color it and it was mixed with olive. It doesn't smell but the container has separated and the clearer stuff on top is more brownish than I remember it supposed to be. I bought it at a store here locally. I used the olive in three other batches with other palm I had and they turned out fine. Don't know what to do. Kinda scared to use it again--dont want to waste my good stuff.

Newb here..Could you please explain this process or point me in the direction of seeing it step by step ? Just getting started and I am trying to compile some need-to-know tips for future reference. I found this extremely interesting.

Hello there, and welcome :)

It's not something I have tried myself, or have read much about.
But you may find this thread helpful, especially if you study Grayceworks' comments on page 2:
