Well I just gave up on my first batch of Translucent Soaps. I followed the directions exactly and well after 3 hours I had to admit it wasn't working. So I have now whipped it and am going to use it for base for other rebatch soaps. Not pretty.

Ah well - back to the drawing board, or I should say soap book and figure out what I did wrong so I can try it one more time.

Oh no,
My heart goes out to you.
A failed batch of soap is for one nano 2nd like loosing a family member.
Hey if you slide over this way a bit I will try and tip your shell the right way up again. Your under belly could be getting sun burnt.
CP or Mp by the way?

Thanks

The recipe called for me to make up the batch yesterday, let it sit for 24 hours and then melt it down adding vodka and sugar.

The recipe is:

16 oz Coconut
16 oz Lard
8 oz Caster
7 oz Olive Oil
6.63 oz Lye
6.8 oz Water
10 oz Vodka
8 oz sugar

Make the soap CP holding back the vodka and sugar which is added the next day after grating the soap and starting the melt process. The soap set up really, really hard, dry and huge cracks like an earthquake in a mold.

I do think I can still do something with this - I'll use it for rebatching and whipping.

Oh, what a shame Lindy :(

I'm sure you will get it - maybe even the next time you make it.....have you learnt anything not to do from your first attempt? That will be a start

I found a recipe and instruction link for transparent soap - have a look by scrolling down the page until you find 'transparent soap'.....it sounds a little different to what you have done.....perhaps will give you some ideas? The next recipe below it on the page is one for 'translucent soap' and that seems more like what you have done......

Great site - thanks! Can I use lard instead of tallow?

Stardusster....

Oh yeah & I am so not done trying to do this one......there will be a next time - probably really soon....

Apparently lard is rendered pig fat and tallow is rendered beef or mutton fat - I have not yet used either but IMHO they should perform in a similar fashion in soaping.....I had a look at their properties on soap calc 9 and they have somewhat similar properties but not close. In soaping they are considered a hard fat as opposed to a liquid one so that property will work the same for you :D
