Since I live on the Pacific Ocean I was thinking about using the salt water from the ocean as the water mix with the lye when I'm making CP soap and calling it something with reference to the ocean but don't know if this would be practical or not r if it's just a BAD IDEA.

Any thoughts?

Hi Jody,

I use the water out of the same ocean you want to use from and I call the soap Malaspina Special. It soaps quite nicely....I want to start gathering my own seaweed (probably sea lettuce) to dry and use in my soaps. I've already made pickles from a Bull Whip.... 8)

It's worth doing Jody...

Hey Jody! I have never made a salt bar, but I remember reading on some forum or another about someone who used sea water to make one. If I recall correctly (and man oh man, I wouldn't bet my life on it!), she found that it wasn't quite as salty as she would like it to be. Have you tried searching on this forum? I'll scan some of the other boards I peruse and see if I can find the thread...

Hey Surf Girl - it doesn't add enough salt to make it a salt bar but it does add a trace and changes the soap too. I added powdered kelp to mine and poured it into sea shells - pretty cool. The problem was that if I wrapped the soap, it stunk of fish......

Hey surf girl

Thanks for the links but you have to be a member to see any threads : (

Linda,

That soap looks awesome!!! Sounds like I should go for it. Just a straight substitution right?

Bull Whip pickles????? Like to eat???? I dunno. I do eat seaweed and sea asparagus, etc.... so I don't now why that sounds yucky. I do like pickles.

Hey Jody - yup straight exchange.....

Bull Whip Kelp pickles and they are too eat. A friend of mine has a cabin over on Texada and when he was walking out to his vehicle he found the kelp on the beach. So he brought it home, brought it over to me and said he had heard you could make pickles out this. Once I managed to quit laughing and the tears had dried up I went searching for a recipe. Found one - made pickles and they are actually pretty good!

I've definitely heard of it being done - just make sure you use a lot of coconut oil, since it is one of the oils that still lathers even in salt water.

Actually Lil'Outlaws you don't need to change your recipe at all. There simply isn't enough salt in ocean water to affect the lather. With the soaps I've done that in I didn't change the basic recipe at all and it works great!

Cheers
Lindy

I love this idea and i intend to make a soap with it once i get my base recipe squared... i think im like 4 generations away or so...

but one note too... salinity in water does differ from place to place! ;)

bull kelp pickles? i have not had a chance to eat this yet but omg if you can can some and send them to me id love you forever lol mmmmmm i wish i lived by cali... FL seaweed is only when its stormy... :(

but i love the idea of adding things from the surrounding enironment to the soaps...its a great idea!!...

has me searching currently for everything i can find thats usable :)

Ian -   I almost died from laughing when he brought this thing to me...even when I was cutting it up I had to keep stopping because I was laughing so hard. I don't know how many of you have ever seen these things but they are rather disgusting and funny all at the same time...

Here's a website about them...http://www.primitiveways.com/bull_whip_kelp.html

At any rate they can be hard to find as I need storms to throw them on shore...

Lindy,

I can get all the bull Whip you need without you waiting for a storm (Like we never have wind and rain here LOL). Just wait for kayaking weather again. I kayak up the inlet towards you regularly and it is lousy with Bull Whip AND Jelly Fish. More Jelly Fish than you could possibly count this last summer.

Jody - I couldn't believe how many jelly fish washed up on the shores this year! I went on a tour of the Ragged Islands and it seemed we saw more jelly fish than anything else. I understand that this is a cycle thingie...

So kelp - that would be great! I do a farmer's market and they've asked that I sell my preserves as well so I think Kelp Pickles would be a big hit...

Oh yeah! I love your new Avatar!!!!!!!!!!!

Ian

Save LOTS for a kayak. I spent a ton of money on mine. I got top of the line but I absolutely LOVE it and it gets a lot of use in the summer.

I just one handed paddle and have my other hand in the ocean with my underwater camera taking pictures. Where I live there are marine campgrounds that are only accessible by boat so that is always fun. Just have to watch out for bears when camping but we hang the food high up in the trees.
