I made a batch of soap colored with TD that had swirls of purple and pink in it and it was great for about 3 months, and then the whole bar started turning brownish. It's almost like the TD faded. It was a nice snow white color at first, with the light colors, but now it just looks horrid. It has been about 7 or 8 months since I made it, but I thought it would last longer than that? Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Oh and I used Lard, OO, CO, and Caster as my oils. I don't think it's DOS, since I didn't get any spots first, it just kind of all turned brownish.

Did you happen use a fragrance oil with any vanilla in it perchance? If so, the fragrance is the most likely culprit. Even if you add gobs of TD to a soap fragranced with an FO that has an appreciable amount of vanillin it, it will discolor to tan or brown eventually in spite of your efforts. Some companies make a product called Vanilla Stabilizer to combat this common problem, but I've never used it. My strategy so far has been to just avoid using discoloring FOs instead.

I've actually used Vanilla stabilizer and I found even that doesn't hold the brown off for long... I always check the vanilla content when looking at a fragrance so I know what to expect. The other thing I do is add fragrance to the coloured parts of my soap so my white stays white...

I'm really sorry this happened to you...

Hmm, I used a Sweet Pea fragrance, and it doesn't list any vanilla, but maybe that is it.

Thanks! It's all a learning experience though, right? I'm just trying to figure out why it happened so I won't repeat it! ;)

I've used Sweet Cake's Sweet Pea that turns brown eventually. That's the only Sweet Pea I've used that discolors.

For a good Sweet Pea that doesn't turn tan/brown, try Peak's. It's a wonderful Sweet Pea-- it's nice and strong and behaves well.
