I'm sitting here drinking my delicious homemade generic red wine. Yummy! Anyway...

I was out of coconut oil and was at the Indian store getting a few things and found coconut oil there. I bought about 4lbs of it and was excited to buy local.

I got home and it smelled like french fries!!!! :x

What a waste of money! I made a basic soap batch because I want to try soap ribbons, but now I'll have french fry soap. :(

Has anybody had this experience before? Needless to say I will be ordering stuff tomorrow.

Does it smell like coconut?
What does the label say?
I have found that extra virgin coconut oil/butter has a very very coconuty smell (unfortunately none of the smell makes it through to the finished soap).
I can't say I've ever smelt coconut oil that smells like french fries.
Did it have a "best before" date?

I wish it smelled like coconuts! It's 100% Pure Coconut Oil. No best before date.

It is not extra virgin coconut oil.

It's not the fancy stuff from the health food store that's for sure!

Soap it and see how it turns out.
Quite possibly the smell will dissipate once it's soaped.
Generally coconut oil is pretty stable, meaning it doesn't go off quickly.

Thanks. I hope it goes away. I will check my soap tomorrow afternoon to see what it smells like, but I'm not hopeful.

The soap smell seems fine today. I have to try really hard to smell anything. I put some of the coconut oil on my skin and it smells like buttery coconuts. Maybe not french fries afterall. Just different.
