sopanification? does yours get hotter?

So I've been having problems with a FO. It keeps burning out on me! I was told that the FO burned off at a low temp and to mix lye and oil at around 105. I did that and poured them into a loaf mold. But when it's sitting in the mold it gets to the gel phase and gets really hot! I have a feeling this is where the FO is burning off. I never really noticed any other batch I made get that hot. Does this happen to you too? I'm just trying to figure out why this amber FO is burning off when I've used the same ingredients before and had a great turn out the first few batches.

Why do you have to gel your loaf? Can't you put it in the freezer to keep the temp from going up?

If the flashpoint is low your soap is most likely getting too hot during the gel phase and that could be why the scent is burning off.

Try preventing gel by soaping at room temp and putting your soap in the fridge or even the freezer overnight.

Like AshleyR said, you can soap at room temp (I've had really good luck with it for my low flashpoint FOs). I melt my solid oils, add my liquid oils and allow for them to cool down to room temp, at the same time I've mixed my lye and liquid and either have that out to cool or cooling off in the fridge until it also reaches room temperature.

The saponification reaction will still make the raw soap heat up after you mix the lye + oils together, but if you start out at room temp it buys you extra time before it starts to get hot enough to burn off that precious FO! Then when, finished, stick it in the fridge and wait.

Mostly now I'm lazy though and use FOs with high flashpoints. I get impatient waiting for everything to cool down! :roll:

If you are covering your mold , I would not do it for this scent , just a layer of saran , if you use it .

I would pre-chill your mold, soap cool and put it in the freezer.

Wow! I never thought I could put them in the fridge or freezer! I thought the temperature mattered and that it needed to be gel get hot. I'll give it a shot. Thanks ladies and hi Krissy!!!

ginaj....if you put it in the freezer (for whatever time) transfer it to the fridge for a day or two. The last time I did put mine in the freezer to prevent if from heating, when I took it out of the freezer it heated up and gelled anyway. The only thing I can think of is that it warmed up too fast??? Anway, just a suggestion.

Thanks! I'm going to give this a shot. I've never had to do it before and I never changed anything from this batch so aside from the the manufacturer changing its FO ingredients, I don't know what it could be! Wish me luck!

might be a good idea to look up the definition of flashpoint. it's not the evaporation temp.

heck, water evaporates but good luck getting it to burst into flame...

I always put mine in the freezer. I have not (so far) had it gel on me after pulling it out. I have, however, had it partially gel, after taking it out too quickly, thinking it was done.
