im planing on spending Christmas soaping and one of the Things i would love to try out is making shampoo bars. i started making soap because ewery soap i bought in the store made me itch and homemade soap fixed it so im thinking homemade shampoo bars might fix my itching scalp. iwe been Reading and watching u-tube and im planing on using sitric acid to lover the ph of the soap to make it beter for my hear but other than that i have no idea where to begin. i havent realy tried formulating a recipe al on my own and i hope someone have a good one they want to schare. i have dry hear

Most seem to hate them, I've been using a lard-based recipe with moderate super fat for years with absolutely no issues (except that my hair is bright and shiny).

The recipe is 60% lard, 20% olive, 15% coconut, 5% castor. 5% super fat. Whatever scent strikes my fancy.

My hair is unprocessed and very short, though, so that certainly has some influence. I just had it cut today and it's back to its normal 1.5" long...

I really think this is key. When I first started using shampoo bars, my hair was around 1" and I loved the bars. My hair was shiny and had more curl.

I grew my hair out for close to 2 years, in that time I watched it go from shiny and sleek to dull and rough. Thinking it was from soap scum/build up, I used special shampoo to clean away any gunk.
That helped for awhile but the dullness and roughness always came back after a couple washes. Eventually my hair started breaking off in 1" chunks.

The high PH of the soap destroyed the cuticle on my hair and once that is damaged or gone, you hair will be brittle and break super easy. Took 2 years for the damage to accumulate but it did. In those two years, I highly recommended shampoo bars and tried to get family to switch.

I had to cut my hair back to 1/4" and grow it completely out again. Once in awhile I still use shampoo bars to help my itchy scalp but never for more than two washes in a row and only a few times a year.

Some people can use shampoo bars and have long hair but I always tell people to watch close for damage and go back to shampoo if your hair starts feeling dry or rough.

May I ask a question, please? I have been reading through SCM's posts on shampoos, and I have been wondering if there are benefits of a syndet shampoo bar vs a liquid/gel shampoo? I mean, it seems like It's many of the same ingredients in different forms (liquid, powder). Is one better or worse for hair? Or is it just the ease of use of a bar?

A lot of people buy it to use in gym, it is gentle and good for all body not only hair :) convenient size, user friendly  I love it :)
