Mine is off a rocky beach that has a lot of motion in it. I also pull it from the top of a jetty to pull the water. I have kept it in a cool environment for up to 2 weeks without it getting stinky.

there's a lot of seaweed and plankton here hehe :) plankton soap :) But there is also a rockier beach with fresher water. Im like 5 min from BC, Lindy.

You and I (a zoology major) would find that entertaining (but only in theory, let me state ftr!!)....but I bet there's some soapers feelin' the quease! ;) :D

Hahaha. Zoology, awesome! I always wanted to go into marine biology. Now i'm probably too old (31) and poor lol. I had a plankton on my back when I was out swimming and sort of freaked, it's like the centipede of the ocean hahaha.

I usually think of plankton as something microscopic, or at least very tiny (like krill) that would be pretty hard to notice whilst swimming, and it's a very generic term that covers a huge range of species. I wonder what it was on your back!?

(You're never too old.
The story goes that a young man registering for first year university saw an old man with a cane standing in the lineup. He walked up to the man and said "excuse me sir, do you know this lineup is for first-year registration?" The old fellow said, "Yes, I am registering for my first year!"
"But, sir, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?"
"I'm about to turn 80, as a matter of fact!"
"But...you will be 84 before you get your degree!?"
"Yes, young man, but I would be 84 anyway")

So true CanaDawn! That's a great quote.

I just thought it was a huge plankton. They kind of move their butts like shrimp when they swim and look like white-ish potato bugs... but a little bigger. My daughter was calling them plankton so I figured they were, hahaha!!

Sorry had to edit, too many typos.

Yeah that was probably an isopod.
This is where I bring up my favorite isopod - the tongue eating isopod!

The first one to find a fish turns female, eats the tongue and acts as a functional tongue for the fish for the rest of its life!
The sea, she is mighty and mysterious :)

This sea water is getting closer to getting tossed down the drain...

I can definitely promise you there are no tongue eating isopods in your water. And it would be obvious if there were any critters large enough to warrant serious concern. I just wanted to forestall the discovery of stinky seawater if you stored it "raw" But *I* would for sure play the Jaws theme while I soaped.... :D

In my many years of owing a sportfisher and offshore fishing I have seen many interesting and gross things but this is one I have not seen! Makes me miss my boat...Yep saltwater can get very stinky. I prefer to just use sea salt

How cool! I'm north of Vancouver on the Sunshine Coast. LOVE it here.... wouldn't ever want to move away....

I love this area! I've lived all over the place and this is my favorite place to live. Second would be France on the coast and 3rd would be Scotland.
But the years I've lived here have been some of the best. Yes, it does rain a lot. Yes it also looks like the Twilight movies here hahaha :) yes, we actually have a rainforest in Washington.

Give it a try Neve, there's nothing in there that will harm you. The lye should kill off any bacteria and any biomass from the plankton and other microscopic beasties may provide some added properties to your soap. Oh and I did marine biology at university, I wouldn't recommend it as a career choice, I did get a job in the field in the end but jobs are few and far between and it's a path with lots of stiff competition and heartbreak.

I made some seawater soap from my visit to Virginia beach. I boiled it for a good 30 minutes, let it cool overnight, and then ran it through a mesh strainer. Hope that I killed off whatever microscopic creatures could have been left over with the lye!

We're surrounded with rain forest here and this town is on the side of a mountain so the views are amazing. I love the fog and I don't mind the rain, you don't have to shovel it.... :lolno:

Ok the stage is set, I'm about to go for it. The seawater smelled fine. Actually I couldn't smell anything at all. I didn't have a coffee filter so I just boiled it in the microwave and poured slowly. Good enough!
