Do salt bars not gel? I split a batch and did half salt, and have regular. They were in the same TOGS mold, with a heating pad under them wrapped in a towel. The regular soap gelled nicely, the salt bar never gelled. Is this normal? Do they ever gell? It looked weird with one gelled and one not.

Salt bars get really hot and should be taken out of the mold after an hour or so. That way they will cut without crumbling. So no gel!

That is weird...not only did mine not gel, that half of the mold seemed cool to me, while the other side got very hot! Only difference was the salt... I did cut them this morning though and they looked great!

Dixie - do you know whether the chances of gel are supposed to be proportional to an increasing quantity of salt, or the other way 'round? I used 100% salt to oil weight.

What about you, Pugmom?

I used 1 lb of salt per pound of oil.

I would think a lot of things would play into factor. For one, the type of oils you use, if they are hard or soft, and then how much salt you use.

If your worried about gel, there are some things you could try to do to get them to gel.
1. Warm your mold in a preheated oven
2. Keep your lye and oils at the highest temps possible below your flash point of your FO's.
3. Heat your salt in the preheated oven as well.
4.Use oils that tend to be softer, say like Olive
4. use less salt, maybe 20 to 30%
5. This would be a really good time to use GM & Honey since they both heat up!
6. After pouring your soap in the mold, cover it and put it in the oven at around 200 degrees. This would be more like OP though. I would worry about the bars getting too hard on me!

Maybe you'll get a gel.

Even if you put it in the oven and turn the oven off I would still keep a really close eye on it because you HAVE to cut those bars before they get too hard or you won't be able to.
Salt does cause the soap to lose temp. rather quickly...thus why you could heat them to help stop this heat loss.

Personally I'd rather not worry about all of it and just say I did a non gel :)

Have fun!

count me in as a non-geller for salt bars although I really dont give them time since they get so hot so fast & have to be unmolded/cut. If i wait more than an hour or two they're too crumbly. I use 100% salt.

This recipe took 13 hours before it started getting hard:

70% coconut
10% castor
20% grapeseed
salt was 1 lb. per lb of oils
Superfated 15%

I was really suprised, I wonder if it was because I used so much grated soap in the recipe:300g.

I have made 2 salt bar recipes , 1 gelled , 1 didn't .The second one (ungelled) had more salt in it .I can't tell the difference in the finished bar. They are both very nice.
