Hi all!

I would love to make a basic goat's milk recipe, but I'm struggling to find some locally. Does anyone know where I could find goat's milk near Houston, Texas? I see Meyenberg goat's milk at the store, but I haven't seen anyone use this. Does anyone have experience making soap with Meyenberg goat's milk?

Question #2: I see some farms nearby that offer pet-safe goat's milk, which is not safe for human consumption. Is this okay to use in my soap since (hopefully) people aren't eating the soap lol?

Great questions!

1. I have never used Meyenberg goat milk in soap because I raise my own goats and use their milk, but I don't see any reason whatsoever that you couldn't use it. I would not use it in evaporated or sweetened condensed form, however. From the refrigerated section in the cardboard boxes is fine.

2. Likely, the only reason farms are advertising their goat milk as pet-safe only and not for human consumption is to avoid breaking laws that regulate the sale of raw milk specifically for human consumption. Personally, I would not hesitate to use pet-safe milk in soap. It wouldn't hurt to ask the farmer if there is another reason their milk is not safe for human consumption, for example, are the animals on hormones or antibiotics or other medication? If the milk is "clean" of medications, it is fine for soapmaking.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply! This makes sense. I will call a few farms and ask them about this. I just didn't want to put something that wasn't safe for humans in my soap, so I will call a few places to make sure it's free of medications! I could just use Meyenberg, but it's fairly expensive for just a quart.

Goat milk is silly expensive from any source! I recommend freezing whatever you end up getting in small ice cube trays so it's always ready for an impromptu soaping session. Plus, the milk keeps for months in a deep freeze as opposed to a week or so in the refrigerator.
Good to know! I didn't know it spoils so quickly in the fridge. I have ice cube trays, so I will freeze whatever I don't use right away!

I've used Meyenburg goats milk for my soaps, but liquid from the carton and powdered. They both work well. :)

I was planning on using the liquid from the carton. Great to know your soaps turned out great! Thank you so much!
