Oh the things you find on the internet!

Copied from website www.grannyslyesoap.com
Lye Soap Recipes
This is one of my favorites. I call it the 25% recipe because it contains 25% coconut oil.

20 lbs lard
5 lbs coconut oil
7.5 lbs of water
3.5 lbs of lye

Follow normal soap making procedures.

Always wear protective clothing in a well ventilated area.

To make the bars more crumbly(harsher),
increase the water and lye by 10%, then by 20% to get desired soap.

I thought you were kidding and thought it was they way it "used" to be made. But alas, no. It is a real recipe for people! Check out the soaps for sale... (taken from the actual website)

Traditional Lye Unscented Soap
Strong
6 lb loaf
$23.95

What the heck does strong mean? I hate to think...amazing what people put out there.

<shudder>

I am going to give the company the benefit of the doubt and know they are not selling lye heavy soap. They would have been sued, out of business or something. Maybe they are using the "colonical times" theme as a selling point???

Well, I just put it on soapcalc, and it gave me this numbers:

Hardness: 49
Cleansing: 14
Condition: 44
Bubbly lather: 14
Creamy lather: 35
Iodine; 48
INS: 163

Is a 44 for condition considered harsh?

:?

Just a little correction to ChrissyB statement, in case somebody else wants to run the recipe through soapcalc: 5 pounds is 20% of the total, not 25%.

I don't think it's the general recipe that's an issue, it's the directions there to make it "stronger" meaning more lye, which will make it very very harsh on the skin.

Hmmm. I see what you mean.
At least, we have to admit they did say adding lye would make the soap harsher...
Too bad the forgot the part where it peels your skin off...
