My teens don't have full blown acne, just some pimples combined with gargantuan pores (poor kids just had to get my skin), but it bugs them. They have more oily skin than I do though and I'm not sure what kind of homemade mask ingredients to use to help their skin clear up.

This will be made on an as needed basis so I don't have to use preservatives.

I have:
Kaolin, bentonite, kelp and sea clays (stinky is fine, we don't care, if the kelp and sea clays work the best, so be it)
Honey
Goat's milk
Coconut milk
Regular yogurts but they're flavored with all sorts of stuff in them
Vitamin E
Normal soap making oils plus safflower, sunflower, sweet almond, grapeseed oils
Lavender and orange EOs, and I think the "wake up rosemary" samples from BB I have are rosemary and peppermint EOs mixed
....possibly some other things that might be good in a mask, I've looked at a ton of recipes? Oat flour, cornmeal...

I don't need amounts so much as what ingredients I should use, if anyone can give me some advice :) Thanks!

My favorite pore minimizing mask is eggs whites with a Mother (ACV) and a titch of lemon juice. Mix till foamy and spread it on thin, let it dry about 10 minutes and rinse. Follow up with Witch Hazel.

My kids use a combo of witch hazel, honeysuckle and willow bark for zits. (don't have the recipe in front of me--something else in there, I think) Works really well--they don't do a mask, it is a liquid they put on daily. We got them all at the herbarie. I do a mask for pore reduction of clay and witch hazel, that I have really found helpful. I think it is the french green clay or bentonite that is recommended for oily skin.

And, I have sometimes put clay in yogurt for a mask and fount it nice.

Bentonite clay is really good for oily skin. Lavender EO is supposed to be really good for oily skin, also. I don't like putting EO's or FO's on my face though.

I use a combination of:
Bentonite clay
ground oatmeal
lemon peel powder

Then I just keep that in a little shaker jar and either just use it with a little bit of water, witch hazel or green tea.

Aaarrgh!!! I just lost everything that I wrote! :x

Highlights of what I wrote -

I agreed with everyone about witch hazel.

French clay - detoxifying

Tea tree oil - study showed addition of 5% helped acne

Jojoba oil - rebalances oil production, read it has antibacterial and antifungal properties, massaged on face it helps to unclog pores.

I've heard of just putting straight tea tree oil on blemishes, but I also feel like I've seen this de-bunked too. It never worked for me, but then my acne seems to be treatment resistant

Other than that, can't be of much help. I use all kinds of chemical garbage my dermotologist prescribes and figure some day soon I will start trying to ween myself into some homemade products, but I'm really scared since the Rx creams are keeping it controlled right now. Nothing like the thought of going from controlled to wild swings of major zits...in your 30s :x

Good luck! And keep us posted!

be careful which type of clay you decide to use, some absorb more oils than others and can make your skin MORE oily if you remove too much oil. (from personal experience... i like red moroccan clay)

i like a toner of:
witch hazel (70-80%)
aloe juice(20-30%)
lavender (a few drops)
tea tree (a few drops)

shake well and apply with a cotton ball all over face, after cleansing.

i make tiny batches, refrigerate, and use them up very quickly so i dont use a preservative... but if you are keeping it in your bathroom i would make a larger batch and just add preservative.
