Still am interested in good a substiute and I have read that too much coconut is very drying to the skin?

It can be but not necessarily.....you can up the superfat to 10-15% and mitigate a lot of the drying effects. I have a salt bar that I bought that is almost 100% coconut, and it's very mild in the shower.

Well, I ran out of palm and I replaced the palm with rice bran and just a little more coconut. Ran it thru soap calc - numbers matched close enough. The soap is only two weeks old, but seems wonderful so far. I'm not an expert, but it's my opinion:)

Deda, I'd use the palm oil. It's still going to be on the shelf rather you buy it or not and someone else is just going to buy it. To some degree, I believe that people can make a difference, one step at a time, but I don't believe that with the palm oil. I love tallow in my soap and all of those cheap shortenings that are out there on the shelf for cheap that make an excellent hard bar of soap. I'm going to buy them because right now it is available for me to buy and was before I ever started making soap.

I eat the pig, so I might as well by the lard that comes from the pig. This could go on and on.
