has anyone made their beer soap using this kind of beer without adding any FO? if so, how does it smell...good? I've used (and liked) Guinness and Pomegranate wheat soaps before (unscented) and want to make a batch of beer soap....was thinking of trying oatmeal stout or else Blue Moon...or maybe another recommendation? thanks! :)

When I soap lager it smells faintly of stale beer for at least a few weeks.

I had to run some errands earlier and didn't get a chance to check back in... ended up getting some Blue Moon. The label says it has a combo of orange peel and coriander...I had planned on not adding any scent to it, but now I'm debating if I should add some litsea, lol.

mine retains a faint smell of good beer even after many months. but that's about it -- like a wonderful olfactory memory of beer... i like to add essential oils that complement the particular beer -- to bump up the scent. even with the added fragrance the beer still comes through, and it's wonderful!

I used a coffee porter

I used a local microbrew, called Cowboy Coffee Porter. I didn't add any scent but I did add some coffee grounds. It came out of the mold smelling like beer, and my husband said, who would want to smell like beer. It has cured for 4 weeks now and has a nice scent that no one can guess, they are always surprised when I tell them what it is. Please post or PM me your Blue Moon results. I also want to do an oatmeal stout. I love the coffee porter and the brewery said it was a limited release and they are not brewing it anymore. I made a black bread with it also that turned out wonderful, it is also good to drink. I'm really gonna miss that beer.

hmm..I think I'll play it safe and not use any scent in my first beer soap batch. I don't want the FO or EO to be overpowering.

@ foresthome: will do! and what a bummer about the coffee porter...the black bread sounds really good!

I made Guinness soap this morning and my family walked in and said it smelled like bad shrimp after adding the beer to the lye. My first beer soap and I am excited to see how it turns out, luckily the shrimpy smell is gone now.

Good luck with yours!!

I made a beer soap 9 days ago (I had my boyfriend try it out. It's the only one he uses now lol. There's about 6 or 7 different soaps in the shower and that's the one he uses  ) and he says it still smells a little like yeast in the shower. I can still smell it in the bars that are still curing as well. It doesn't smell stale or anything. Kinda sweet. I used Magic Hat Dark As Night Winter Blend. (Too bad I didn't care for the taste, at all. Oh well, more for soaping!)

I use sam adams cherry wheat and it does have a nice smell after curing. It's a faint...somewhat sweet, oatmealy, almondy, earthy scent. Kinda hard to describe.

That sounds wonderful. I'm doing a home brewed indian pale ale soap tonight (if the kids let me by actually sleeping...) and I keep debating on adding scent to it. I think I'll leave it as is and take it from there. Or maybe Cypress and Bergamot..?

hmmm

I think things went well today...I boiled the beer for about 5 minutes this morning then put it in the freezer for a few hours until it was real slushy. I put the pitcher used for the beer/lye mixture in an ice bath when I made the lye solution...didn't get any volcanoing at all. I ended up using some litsea (I'm always changing my mind, lol) because it did smell weird. I know the funky smell will fade, but when I opened the bottle of litsea and smelled it, I went "mmm gotta use some"! I used .9 oz for a 2lb. batch, so will see how much scent makes it through after it's cured.

here's a pic of my beer soap cut (Blue Moon). I tried like crazy to get a textured top and ended up with lots of air pockets, grrr...the bars in the pic are the best ones (not so many air pockets).

The tops (the whole soap!) looks GREAT! They look so creamy and you did a really nice job with the tops.

thank you, they actually smell really good...the waiting is the hardest part! Even my DH can't wait to use it, lol.

Your soap looks beautiful! I love the color of it. So nice and creamy looking. Kepp up the good work!!!
