:) Hello all I am new to the forums and love that I can get advise here. Thank you. I have been making soap off and on since 1982 but am somewhat new to 'all vegetable oil' soaps. Is there an advantage to using pomace olive oil over using say Costco's Olive oil. I have been buying bulk olive oil from stores and now see that I can buy the pomace oil at a lower price.

Welcome to the forum! :D

I don't know if there is an advantage to using pomace over another type of olive oil other than price. Pomace is manufactured from the last pressing of olives and they use a chemical to extract the remaining oil. It does trace faster than EVOO VOO, and regular OO. Some people like pomace and won't use a different type of OO. Some people don't like it. I've never used it so I can't give you an opinion on how it is in soap.

Dang I don’t like that they use a chemical to extract the oil. Any chance there is any of that chemical left in the oil. I used some the other day for the first time and my batch, thankfully only a 1.5 pound batch, seized. Don’t know if it was the oil or the FO I used. Lilac btw.

I believe that's why some people don't like to use it because of the use of solvents to extract oil from the remaining pulp. However, I know there are some experienced and knowledgeable soapers on this forum who only use pomace. So, it may not be a big concern. After all, chemical solvents are used in food processing for many things. Think of it this way - lye is also used in food processing. Yes, we eat lye!

I do know originally hexane was used and there was a small possibility some hexane could remain in the oil. However from what I've read, companies that manufacture oils are have been discontinuing the use of it. (I think this started back in 2010. Don't hold me to that date - I may be wrong.) I don't know what they're using as a replacement. Does it say on the container who the manufacturer is and list a website for info?

I used to use OO from local stores but I ended up buying a 50 lb container from soaperschoice.com. It worked out cheaper even with shipping added to the price. I decided I was using so much OO that I might as well buy a larger amount and save some money.

Where did you get the FO? I've heard people have had problems with florals accelerating and seizing. I've only used Peak's lilac and it was well behaved. I didn't have any problems with it.

I would say its your FO, some people are having trouble with lilac, I haven't had any issue with it though and I use pomace all the time now mainly for price and found it does trace fairly quick but thats the way I like it.

Welcome marghewitt! :)

I use the Costco's Pure OO. Normally I would order it out like I do most of my other soaping fats, but with the shiping costs to my area it turns out it's a few dollars cheaper for me to just make a run down to Costco to get some.
